With Memorial Day weekend behind us, the summer season in the Hamptons is officially underway. Only this year, the Hamptons crowd is afraid that their posh and glittery getaway spot is being tarnished by interlopers.
And the most notable among the interlopers are the Kardashians, two of which — Khloe and Kourtney — will be filming their reality show, Kourtney & Khloe Take The Hamptons, out there.
According to The New York Daily News:
Society publicist R. Couri Hay, who’s been summering in the Hamptons since the 1960s, laughs that “the old money are in horror about the arrival of the Kardashians. The locals are always happy that the summer business is coming in, but also terrified of losing that level of perfection that people who go to the Hamptons want.”
And it’s not just the Kardashians. Other people (gasp!) who aren’t the normal Hamptons sort are spending their days at the restaurants and beaches. In part, this is because the Jersey Shore was impacted by Hurricane Sandy. In part it’s because, like anything else, the Hamptons has a name and people want to check it out for themselves to see what all the hubbub is about.
Locals are so angry, they’ve taken to social media to post pictures of the bad behavior on Facebook and a contractor with high-end clients has created a Twitter account, @HamptonsBorn.
It’s a virtual cry for the riff raff to get off their well-manicured lawns. Only problem is that it’s making people a lot of money.
According to the Daily News all of the changes — the chain stores, the wild parties and the free shuttle — is a big boost for the businesses in the area. While they welcome the money, they turn their nose up at the “caliber” of people who are spending it.
Then you have Irma Herzog who has leased her space to the Kardashian sisters for their pop-up store, Dash, to go along with their show. Rather than pay tens of thousands for the space, Herzog wants the publicity for her restaurant next door, according to gossip reports.
With the Jersey Shore on the comeback, the Hamptons may see a drop off in the number of people trekking all the way out to Long Island to spend loads on food and accommodations. But they are stuck with the Kardashians and their store all summer. And who knows. Maybe next summer, after everyone watches the show, the locals will get their wish and everyone will stay away.
