Time Out NY to Unemployed Journalists: “Sell Out – A Little”

Time Out New York issued their “Jobs” issue this week, which should be a hot seller in this job market. One of the sections, which advises media professionals how to find new jobs outside of the industry, recommends PR, and gives journos a step by step process on how to get a PR job. It’s no surprise, as we’ve seen many journalists make the move as of late. Step one in the process? “Sell out. A little.”

Time Out spoke with Heather Flynn, staffing manager at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide as well as Jackson Jeyanayagam, a director at PainePR to flesh out their five step process. Jeyanayagam specifically suggests going the agency route. “In-house PR could be frustrating as a first job. It’s more cutthroat, there’s more structure, more politics, and it’s less creative,” he said.
