ABC News, CNN Win Cronkite Awards

The winners of the 2013 Walter Cronkite Awards for Excellence in Television Political Journalism were announced this morning. ABC News, CNN, Univision and BET were all honored for campaign coverage during the 2012 election cycle.

ABC News had two winners in the national individual achievement category, Jonathan Karl and Martha Raddatz. Karl, the network’s chief White House correspondent, was honored for his “refreshing and original” political analysis. Raddatz, the chief global affairs correspondent, received a special commendation for debate moderation for her work in the Vice Presidential debate.

CNN won the inaugural Cronkite/Jackson Prize for fact checking for Tom Foreman‘s “Reality Checks” segments, which “effectively used three dimensional graphics to clarify the complexity of the underlying issues.”

In the National Network Programming category, the Cronkite awards go to campaign coverage on BET, which was honored for reporting with “a lot of heart and passion,” and Univision, which was praised for journalists who are “relentless in their approach to getting information.”

The awards, given by the Norman Lear Center at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism,  will be presented April 19 at The National Press Club in Washington D.C.
