The Top Cable News Shows in August Were…

Fox News had the top 14 programs in total viewers and the top nine programs in the key A25-54 demographic in August 2014. As usual, “The O’Reilly Factor” was the number one program in cable news in both total and demo viewers, averaging 2,703,000 total viewers and 462,000 demo viewers. “The Kelly File” was second in total viewers and the demo, with 2,245,000 and 409,000 viewers respectively. “The Five,” “Special Report with Bret Baier” and “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren rounded out the top five in total viewers; “Hannity,” “The Five,” and “Special Report” rounded out the top five in the demo.

MSNBC’s highest-rated show in total viewers was “The Rachel Maddow Show,” which placed 15th overall with 810,000 viewers. “Lockup” was the top show in the demo for the network, drawing 190,000 viewers.

Anderson Cooper 360″ was CNN’s highest-rated daily show in both total viewers and the demo, finishing 17th overall in total viewers and 10th overall in the demo. Cooper’s program averaged 708,000 total viewers and 242,000 demo viewers. “The Sixties,” whose weekly Thursday run ended in the middle of the month, drew the most total viewers for the network. The original series averaged 726,000 viewers.

“Nancy Grace” led HLN in both ratings measurements, placing 34th in total viewers and 31st in the demo with 400,000 and 138,000 viewers, respectively.

The top-rated show in total viewers on Fox Business was “Varney & Co.,” which ranked 77th overall. “The Independents” led the way in the demo, also ranking 77th. CNBC’s leader in both total viewers and the demo was “Shark Tank,” ranking 35th and 24th, respectively.

Cable Network Ranker: FNC #3 in Primetime for August 2014

Fox News was the top cable news network for the month of August, averaging 1,782,000 viewers in primetime and 1,056,000 viewers in total day. Fox News placed third in primetime and fourth in total day among all ad-supported cable networks for the month.

CNN placed 26th in primetime and 16th in total day, delivering 629,000 primetime viewers and 503,000 total day viewers. MSNBC placed 31st in primetime and 28th in total day, averaging 571,000 viewers and 342,000 viewers, respectively.

August 2014 Ratings: Fox News Sees Across-the-Board Growth

During what was a busy news month, Fox News Channel was the third most-watched cable channel, behind only ESPN and USA in primtime. The network saw year-over-year growth of +15% in viewers and +27% in the demo.

The ratings for August 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1,782,000 total viewers / 320,000 A25-54
  • Total Day Mon-Sun): 1,056,000 total viewers / 224,000 A25-54

Fox News also experienced total day growth: up +9% in viewers and up +17% in the demo. Several daytime shows hit new highs including “Outnumbered” which had its best month ever, since its April launch, in both total viewers and the demo. It’s up nearly +25% in viewers and up +30% in the key demo vs. the NoonET time period last year. “America’s Newsroom” notched a 2014 demo high.

In primetime, “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” had its third best month of 2014, “The O’Reilly Factor” had its best demo month of the year. While “The Kelly File” and “Hannity” each had their best demo performances since the primetime shake-up last fall. For the sixth straight month, Fox News claimed the top 14 programs on cable news. Last August was a downer across the cable news dial, including on Fox News which experienced its lowest demo since 2001.

August 2014 Ratings: CNN Ranks #2 in Total Day and Prime, Up Most Year-Over-Year

A busy news month gave CNN the most growth of the cable news networks in August. CNN was up +46% in total viewers and up +43% in A25-54 viewers for total day viewing finishing #2 behind Fox News.

The ratings for August 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 629,000 Total Viewers / 214,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 503,000 Total Viewers / 154,000 A25-54

In primetime, CNN was up +39% in viewers and up +60% in the demo vs. August 2013 which was a comparatively slow news month. CNN

Anderson Cooper 360” was up +38% in viewers and up +73% in the demo. At 10pmET, “CNN Tonight,” which last year was an “AC360″ re-air, was up +49% in viewers and up +70% in the demo. “New Day” topped MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” with a +14% advantage in total viewers and +66% lead in the demo. And the network continues to see success with its original series: “The Sixties,” which wrapped its eight-episode Thursday run in the middle of the month. It was the network’s most-watched show drawing 726,000 viewers. “The Hunt with John Walsh,” was #1 in its Sunday 9pmET time period in total viewers and the demo.

Even with a strong August, CNN is delivering its least-watched year since 1996 in Total Day among total viewers. Year-to-date CNN is ahead of MSNBC in total day in both total viewers and the demo.
