Evening News Ratings: Week of December 23 & Q4 2013

EveningNewsNew“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” caps off 2013 atop the evening news broadcasts, leading “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” by +1,107,000 total viewers and +236,0000 A25-54 viewers for the week of December 23. Sawyer’s broadcast leads “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” by +1,018,000 and +884,000, respectively.

“World News” and “Evening News” were both down compared to the same week last year: Sawyer’s broadcast was down -4% in total viewers and -38% in the A25-54 demographic, while Pelley’s was down -3% and -43%, respectively. “Nightly News” was up slightly, +1%, in total viewers and down -32% in the demo.

Note: the averages are based on three days (Monday, Thursday and Friday) due to the Christmas holiday.

Michelle Obama’s Kind Words for Robin Roberts

In response to “GMA’s” Robin Roberts publicly coming out, First Lady Michelle Obama tweeted her support.

Roberts landed the first TV interview with Mrs. Obama back in 2009, and has interviewed the first couple as well.

She came out publicly over Facebook, expressing her gratitude for longtime girlfriend Amber, as well to her sister Sally-Ann, who was Roberts’ bone marrow donor.

Ken Strickland’s Year-End Note to the NBC News Washington Bureau

logo nbcnewsIn his year-end note to the NBC News Washington bureau, bureau chief Ken Strickland touted the D.C. staffers as a group that has “integrity, excellence, passion, and occasionally some fun.” He singled out Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell for their political reporting, Pete Williams for his reporting on the Boston Marathon bombings and “Meet the Press” for its “memorable, newsmaking interviews.”

“When Deborah Turness first visited earlier this fall, she made a point to say how impressed she was with our operation and what a critical role we play in the news division’s overall success,” Strickland writes. “As Deborah continues to work with each of the shows to define their mission, she’s also excited to work with us to identify new opportunities and achieve new goals.”

‘Duck Dynasty’ Stars to Appear on Fox News New Year’s Special

fox news duck dynastyWillie and Korie Robertson of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” will be interviewed on Fox News’ New Year’s Eve special tonight. The interview, live from Steamboat Springs, will be the pair’s first television appearance since A&E reinstated “Duck Dynasty” co-star Phil Robertson after his controversial comments about gay people and African-Americans.

The interview will take place during Fox News’ “All American New Years’ Eve,” which begins at 9pmET tonight. Hosts Bill Hemmer and Elisabeth Hasselbeck will conduct the interview.

Melissa Harris-Perry Apologizes for Poking Fun at Romney Family Photo

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized this morning via Twitter for her show poking fun at a Romney family photo that included his recently adopted African-American grandchild.

She’s also written a more formal apology on MSNBC.com.

The offensive comments came on her show Sunday when Harris-Perry and her panel played a caption contest with a Romney family photo. One panelist pointed out the Romney’s African-American grandchild Kieran standing out among a majority of white grandchildren by singing lines from the Sesame Street song: “One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others.” Read more
