How NBC News Will Get Around China’s Internet Censorship

NBCChina_7.31.jpgNBC News insiders now in Beijing covering the lead up to the Olympics tell TVNewser they have a way of getting around the Chinese government’s decision to censor some Internet sites.

NBC News is not working out of the Main Press Center or the International Broadcast Center where most global journalists set up shop. Instead they are working out of the Beijing International Convention Center. And so far, NBC News personnel have not encountered any problems. One was even able to get on the Amnesty International site yesterday, which was reportedly one of the sites that was blocked. However, if staffers use a wireless network at the convention center or work from their hotels, the government filters might prevent unfettered Web access.

Our insider tells us many locals have found channels where they can get around the filters, but for journos working out of the MPC and IBC the filters will likely exist unless the IOC pleads the media’s case.
