Listen: CNN's Don Lemon on User Generated Content

lemon10-21.jpgThis morning TVNewser and co-host Matt Van Hoven were joined on the Morning Media Menu by CNN Newsroom anchor Don Lemon. The topic of today's discussion: user-generated content in the ever-changing media landscape.

"I don't think it's new media vs old media," he said. "We're all evolving." Part of that evolution for CNN has involved integrating user-generated reporting in the form of tweets and iReports into its newsgathering. "It's not an even an advanced tip-line. It's a tip-line for now. It's the right now tip-line." But he explained that there is a clear vetting process for that kind of content at CNN.

Lemon believes everyone can be "their own network," but there are big upsides and downsides to amateur reporting: "Anybody can have a blog right? It's still not going to be the same professional quality...that you get from training." And Lemon points out that a lot of blog contributors don't have the resources at hand to fact-check information. "Can everyone be a network of record? Probably not."

Lemon also gave us a pretty funny recap of his experiences at the Blog World Expo in Las Vegas during last few minutes, which is worth checking out.

Menu: What We Learned Over The Last Six Months

mmm_2-3.gifToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we'll discuss Bill Keller's trip to Iran (and his reaction to those who have reacted with surprise) and Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show — how are the ratings?

As always on Friday, we'll have "What We Learned This Week" — only this time, it's "What We Learned Over The Last Six Months."

See...it's my last podcast. We'll take a look back at some past moments, including our highest profile shout-out (Thanks, Rush Limbaugh!).

Menu: "Life Inc." Author Douglas Rushkoff on Iran and More

mmm_2-3.gifToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we're joined by Douglas Rushkoff, the author of the new book, "Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back."

He also wrote a column this week on The Daily Beast headlined, "How Iran's Hackers Killed Big Brother," about the Twitter uprising and what it means for the country. "Everyone was being very results-oriented, and ready to judge the efficacy of the Internet and politics based on whether or not they were able to overturn the election," he said. "It seemed to me that the Twitterers could already claim a certain kind of victory."

Staying in Iran, we discuss why there are fewer journalists in the country now, and why there are fewer media mergers as well. "That's largely what 'Life Inc.' is about: the way we accept corporate logic as true, even when it's not," he said.

Also discussed: why "the Paris Hiltons of writing have...done a lot better than the writer's of writing," his "Fail Inc" multimedia approach and details of his New York "free" meet-up tonight. Plus: a mediabistro shout-out!

Menu: NYT's Stelter on Iran Coverage and More

mmm_2-3.gifToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we're joined by Brian Stelter of the New York Times.

He's been traveling around the country this week with storm chasers, and describing the situation on Twitter. We also discuss Iran coverage. "I think that story is going to get more and more interesting all week as more and more foreign journalists are forced out of the country," says Stelter.

He commented on the cable news coverage. "I've been thinking a lot about the effect that cable news coverage has on people's awareness of a story, and I really think that there's something about rolling live coverage for hours at a time that sends a message that this is important, and the fact that the cable didn't really do that this weekend is a little strange," he said. "It might be a sign of what's to come on cable news. Maybe cable news isn't going to be that IV drip of news, maybe Twitter's going to be that IV drip of news."

From the newsfeed: the AP is looking for new internet deals and the criticism for ABC's White House special.

Menu: Iran Media Angles: Twitter, Keller and More

mmm_2-3.gifThe situation in Iran has become a major media story, with endless angles of coverage.

Today on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu, we look at a couple. Last night Twitter delayed a scheduled shutdown so the "role Twitter is currently playing as an important communication tool" in Iran could continue.

Also, why is New York Times editor Bill Keller writing front page stories for his paper from Iran? What does that say about the crisis — and the paper?

Chris Hansen Talks Vegas, Twitter And How To Make a $100 Bill

hansen_6-15.bmpNBC's Chris Hansen joined us today on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu Tonight to talk about his Dateline special, "Vegas Undercover," premiering tonight at 10pm.

"This hour...shows what goes on behind the scenes in this town," said Hansen. "It's absolutely fascinating. Not only do we catch these people in the act, we get to talk to them afterward."

Hansen also talked about how new media has impacted what he does. "Sometimes we need to go out there, to Twitter and on the Web, to bring people into our tent," he said. "That's an important part of what we do.

Also discussed: the craziest thing viewers will see on the special (involves making a $100 bill), the jailed journalists in North Korea and what is currently false about his Wikipedia page (and why he keeps it that way).
