Al Neuharth: ‘Couric Has Proved Me Wrong’

couricdakota10-9.jpgUSA Today founder Al Neuharth has been proved wrong on something he wrote three years ago. On September 7, 2006, Neuharth wrote: “[Katie] Couric can’t cut it if she stays on the non-news fringe she started out on this week.” This week, Couric traveled to South Dakota where she was presented with the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media. Today, Neuharth writes:

Partly because of CBS’ overall weaker network program lead-ins, Couric still has challenges trying to catch ABC and NBC counterparts in national ratings. But not here in South Dakota. Polls here rate her No.1 among the top three. Not only has Couric “cut it,” but when Diane Sawyer takes over as anchor of ABC World News in January, she has Katie to thank for paving the way.

Past recipients include: Walter Cronkite, Helen Thomas, Tom Brokaw, Larry King, and Tim Russert.

Brian Williams to Receive Cronkite Award

Williams_4.6.jpgBrian Williams has been named this year’s recipient of the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Williams will receive the 26th Cronkite Award from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at a ceremony Nov. 18.

Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan called Williams “a great journalist who covers the news with depth and understanding in the best tradition of Walter Cronkite.”

“As someone who grew up idolizing Walter and having come to know him in adult life, I know that there is no greater name in our profession,” Williams said. “I only hope I am worthy of the meaning and tradition of this honor. Walter Cronkite is the only reason I entered the field of television journalism.”

Previous Cronkite Award recipients include Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Katharine Graham, Bob Woodward, Al Neuharth and Ted Turner.

Just last month, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric won another award named for Cronkite – the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism from USC’s Annenberg School.
