Women in the World, Brought to you by Women in TV News

NBC News special correspondent Chelsea Clinton was among the tvnewsers leading panels at today’s Women in the World conference. But it was her mother who got a thunderous applause and shouts of “2016!” when she took the stage at the fourth annual event. Hillary Clinton called women’s rights “a core imperative for every society.”

Clinton’s speech kicked off the day’s events, which featured an impressive roster of women from the television news industry: ABC’s Cynthia McFadden, Deborah Roberts and JuJu Chang and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell all moderated panel discussions on topics ranging from women in the tech industry to fostering female leaders.

Before moderating a spirited panel discussion about the epidemic of sexual abuse in India, McFadden (pictured above) talked with an Indian woman who was the victim of a rape. She sat with her back to the audience in order to conceal her identity. The woman, whose case is still pending in the Indian high court, described how she was raped by a male friend of hers four

Al Roker’s White House Confession: ‘I Pooped My Pants’

“Dateline NBC” featured Al Roker‘s weight loss battle last night — warts and all. Roker’s trainer discussed how the NBC weatherman keeps off the weight. His wife, ABC’s Deborah Roberts, talked about what his weight loss has meant to their relationship and sex life. And Roker confessed about the time he was at the White House after his gastric bypass surgery. “You pooped in your pants,” said correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman. “I pooped my pants,” Roker concurred.

Lara Spencer Loves A Good Yard Sale, and Parties for Books about Yard Sales

Lara Spencer, once host of PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow,” loves a good roadside sale. And now she’s written a book about it.

So last night, designer Jonathan Adler hosted the GMA anchor and a crowd of tvnewsers and friends at his Madison Avenue store celebrating the publication of her new book “I Brake For Yard Sales.”

Spotted in the crowd: George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth, Josh Elliott, ABC News President Ben Sherwood, (right, with Spencer) ABC SVP’s James Goldston and Jeffrey Schneider, ABC anchor Deborah Roberts, WABC anchor Diana Williams, Fox5 New York anchor Greg Kelly, ABC’s Dan Abrams and NBC’s Donnie Deutsch, among others.

Spencer outlines some of her tips in a Yard Sales 101 column on ABCNews.com.

’20/20′ Leads With Hour on Cruise Ships

ABC’s “20/20,” which devoted last night’s show to the cruise ship tragedy in Italy a week earlier, was Friday night’s #1 show with younger viewers. The special edition covered the breaking news of the Costa Concordia disaster with reporting from Chris Cuomo in Italy and Elizabeth Vargas and Deborah Roberts in New York. In head-to-head competition with Dateline NBC in the 10pm hour, “20/20″ was ahead in Total Viewers (+31%), A25-54 (+47%) and A18-49 (+29%). During its reporting on the Costa Concordia disaster this week — including last night — ABC News has mentioned its ties to the cruise ship industry. In one of her stories about cruise ship safety Vargas said, “Even our parent company, Disney, has cruise ships.”

ABC Plans ‘Hunger at Home: Crisis in America’ Series

This week, ABC News is kicking off a division-wide series called “Hunger at Home: Crisis in America.” Reporting will be done by weekend anchor David Muir, who has also reported this summer on the famine in Somalia, as well as Steve Osunsami, chief medical editor Richard Besser, and Deborah Roberts. The reports, which will begin on Wednesday, will air on “Good Morning America,” as well as “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline,” and will draw attention to the growing hunger problem on the homefront:

Meredith Vieira leaving ‘Today:’ The News Conference

There’s a news conference happening right now on the anchor changes coming to “Today.” Taking part: Steve Capus, NBC News President, Jim Bell, Executive Producer of “Today,” and anchors Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, Al Roker, and Natalie Morales with Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie in the audience.

We’re listening in, and will update this post with the Q&A:

Capus: I appreciate you coming over on short notice… for the news of this state secret (laughter). It didn’t take Wikileaks to reveal this news.

Capus: Matt was absolutely right, Meredith is adored all around NBC News. To be able to turn to Ann and Natalie and Savannah in new roles and joining the linchpins of Matt and Al, we’re just thrilled.

Big round of applause for Hoda and Kathie Lee.

Bell: It’s truly been a pleasure working with Meredith. There’s no one else like here. I’m going to miss her terribly. We only had to go 10 feet over to the news desk for Ann Curry, who is really one of the best storytellers and beloved members of this family.

Vieira: I feel so good about Ann taking over because it will be entirely seamless. You don’t occupy a seat at TODAY forever. And now it’s time to go. And now it’s Ann’s Day.

Lauer: I have never enjoyed working with anyone more than Meredith.

Lauer: Ann and I have hosted the show together about 200 times in 15 years, so it feels totally natural.

Curry: [To Meredith] You’ve brought a graciousness to our broadcast. I don’t like change in the morning (laughter). [To Lauer] sitting next to you will be one of the greatest things in my life. [To

Okay… we finally got around to pulling these pictures from our camera. They are from MSNBC’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner after-party.

The boldfacers we saw: Alec Baldwin, FBN’s Charlie Gasparino, the entire Today show front six: Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, Al Roker, (with his wife, ABC’s Deborah Roberts) Hoda Kotb, and Kathie Lee Gifford. Weekend Today co-anchor Amy Robach and husband Andrew Shue; MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough and FNC’s Greta Van Susteren. Also, Brian Williams and wife Jane. Brian dropped in for just a bit, he was going back to New York, only to catch a plane Sunday for New Orleans for a quick trip. He’s back in New York today covering the arrest in the Times Square bomb plot. (Programming note: Brian’s senior producer Subrate De is a guest on tomorrow’s Morning Media Menu podcast: 9:30amET)

But we left on the early side. FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein stuck around for more.

O’Brien, Roberts Headline Big Brothers Big Sisters Event

Tonight, CNN’s Soledad O’Brien emcees the Big Brothers Big Sisters Sidewalks of New York gala at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria. ABC’s Deborah Roberts will be presented with the Communication Award.

Who Will Co-Anchor ‘GMA’ Weekend?

With Kate Snow departing ABC, as we first reported earlier today, for NBC’s “Dateline,” the natural question arises: who will take over the “Good Morning America” weekend edition slot co-anchoring with Bill Weir?

Juju Chang and Bianna Golodryga both taped auditions for newsreader when the weekday edition added George Stephanopoulos as co-anchor late last year. Chang got the job, leaving Golodryga as the front-runner for the weekend show. But don’t rule out Chang for the job either.

Other internal candidates could be correspondent Deborah Roberts and GMA consumer reporter Elisabeth Leamy.

Chang and Elizabeth Vargas will co-anchor with Weir this Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
