Ratings for ’20/20,’ ‘Dateline’ Friday Sandy Specials

ABC and NBC aired dueling Superstorm Sandy specials last night. “20/20″ branded theirs “Heroes Among Us” while Dateline’s was “Sandy: Rescue and Recovery”

TVbytheNumbers has the overnight ratings which show “20/20″ drew 5.42 million viewers (1.5 rating in 18-49) while “Dateline” drew 3.83 million (1.1 rating in 18-49). “20/20″ won the hour among the younger demo. But both shows were beaten by CBS’s “Blue Bloods” which pulled in 11 million viewers. ABC and NBC both lost viewers from the 9pm lead-in: “Shark Tank” on ABC and “Grimm” on NBC.

As it turns out, last night’s “Dateline” almost didn’t air. As of Friday morning “Revolution” was in the Friday 10pm timeslot. That decision, replacing the news show with an entertainment show, didn’t sit well with NBC News staffers who had been working on Hurricane Sandy aftermath stories for several days. Lester Holt reported in depth from Breezy Point, Dennis Murphy from the Jersey Shore and Jeff Rossen reported on a crackdown on unlicensed contractors. At some point, NBC executives put “Dateline” back on at 10pm (my cable guide still had “Revolution” on at 10).

Earlier in the night, NBC’s “Come Together” telethon aiding Sandy survivors tied for second in 18-49 viewers with a 1.5 rating, and third in total viewers drawing 6.26 million.

The Afternoon Ticker: Regan, Schultz, Dateline

  • Bloomberg TV’s Trish Regan is hosting a two-hour special, “The American Dream,” at 12pmET tomorrow. Regan told TVNewser that she came up with the concept to celebrate patriotism during the current uncertain economy. “This Independence Day, let’s remember we’ve also got unique and defining strengths,” she said. “Work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit and a resilient democracy.”
  • MSNBC’s Ed Schultz tells the New York Post about his summer vacation plans. “Our whole biological clock in this business is based on deadlines,” he said. “We are creatures of habit in this business and we are slave to the deadline, so when you go on vacation, just about anything makes you happy.”
  • For the next three weeks, NBC will air two hours of “Dateline” on Friday evenings at 9pmET/8pmCT. This week’s edition features a scuba-diving mystery reported by Dennis Murphy.

NBC’s ‘Dateline’ Celebrates 20th Season With Mystery-Themed Party

TVNewser stopped by an event in celebration of the 20th season of NBC’s “Dateline” last night. The party, which had a mystery theme, was held at Manhattan’s Griffou.

Attendees — including Chris Hansen, Hoda Kotb, Dennis Murphy, Keith Morrison, Josh Mankiewicz and “Dateline” executive producer Liz Cole — had their mugshots taken and uploaded to Twitter using the hashtag #howdoyoudateline.

Also in attendance was NBC News President Steve Capus, who was spending his birthday with the “Dateline” crew (they had a chocolate cake in his honor). He told TVNewser that earlier in the day he received a “Put On A Happy Face” singing telegram at his office.

Lester Holt Named anchor of ‘Dateline NBC’

Longtime Weekend “Today” and “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt is adding “Dateline NBC” to his anchor duties. Holt takes over for Ann Curry who has anchored the show since 2005, and who was named co-anchor of “Today” in May.

“Dateline NBC” was Launched in 1992, and in recent years has covered sensational crime stories which draw viewers and are easily re-purposed on MSNBC and other cable nets.

Holt — whose nickname is Iron Pants around the office, a testament to his work ethic — begins anchoring the 20th season of Dateline this Friday. Chris Hansen, Hoda Kotb, Josh Mankiewicz, Keith Morrison and Dennis Murphy continue as correspondents.

“One of the hardest working men on television, we are so pleased that Lester has added ‘Dateline’ to his portfolio,” said NBC News president Steve Capus.

As Dateline gets a new anchor, NBC News continues to put significant time and money behind “Rock Center with Brian Williams,” a new weekly, live primetime news program anchored by Brian Williams. A premiere date for “Rock Center” has not yet been announced.

A Lot of Dennis Murphy on TV tonight: Bathtubs and Bin Laden

MSNBC has put together a “Dateline” special detailing the effort to kill Osama Bin Laden. The one-hour special, hosted and reported by Dennis Murphy, will run tonight at 10pmET on the cable news channel. NBC military analyst Gen. Barry McCaffrey (ret.) and former CIA Acting Director John McLaughlin take part. Meanwhile, over on NBC, Murphy reports a 2-hour crime-driven “Dateline” called “The Bathtub Mystery” a follow up to a story Murphy first reported two years ago. That’s at 9pmET/PT.

The Ticker: FNC, ABC, NBC…

> With the story that keeps on giving for the news networks, FNC tallied its highest prime time Total Viewer average since November 19 last night and highest in the A25-54 demo since November 12 while reporting the Gov. Rod Blagojevich arrest. FNC had more Total Viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined in prime time.

> Today’s ABC World News webcast at 3pmET produced a story that made it to the actual broadcast tonight at 6:30pm. Ned Potter‘s “Google Zeitgeist” report will be expanded and air on the TV broadcast.

> Dateline NBC’s Dennis Murphy reports on the Caylee Anthony case on Friday at 10pm. Cindy and George Anthony, the grandparents of the missing girl, are interviewed.
