Liberty Bowl Moving From ESPN To ABC

The 53rd annual Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 will be televised on ABC instead of ESPN.

The bowl game match up between a representative from the Southeastern Conference and the Conference USA champion was once a staple on ABC between 1966-1980.

Thanks to solid ratings and a an attractive time slot, ABC decided to once again air the bowl game, which will gain 16 million households as a result.

“We’ve enjoyed being on ESPN the last two decades,”AutoZone Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart said. “But the chance to have our game on ABC, which is Disney-owned like ABC, raises us to another level. With ABC, we’ll have an additional 16 million households available to us so we can spread the message of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”

Former Blazer Mychal Thompson Trying Out for Portland Radio Gig

Former NBA player Mychal Thompson, who hosted an ESPN radio show in Los Angeles until losing his job under new management in December, is being given a tryout with KXTG (95.5 FM “The Game”) in Portland, where the 1978 overall #1 pick spent the first nine seasons of his 15-year career. Thompson, who has also worked as a Lakers radio analyst for the last eight years, will begin an audition on Wednesday to host the 10 a.m.-to- noon slot.

Thompson lives in Los Angeles but would have to move to Portland if given the position, said program director Brian Jennings.

L.A. has been good to Thompson and his family, but his heart has remained with the City of Roses.

“I love Portland,” he says. “I always tell Julie, Portland’s my favorite city.”

Thompson will do his shows for “The Game” with co-host Dave Smith, a Los Angeles broadcaster “who has Portland connections and knows the market well,” Jennings says. They’ll conduct their shows from a studio in L.A.

“Hopefully, it will turn into something permanent,” Thompson says. “We’re freelancing, looking to get on somebody’s station.

“It’s like having Kobe (Bryant) and Dwyane (Wade) as free agents. Somebody has to be smart enough to sign us.”

ESPN's John Clayton Denies Ever Having A Ponytail

One of the running bits on The Dan Patrick Show is ESPN’s John Clayton has a ponytail.

(Google “John Clayton ponytail.” You’re welcome.)

Clayton finally responded to the allegations on Brock and Salk in Seattle (710 AM ESPN) and points the finger at Dan Patrick for starting the rumor.

I’m still not buying it.
