NY Mag’s ‘Chasing Fox’: The Takeaway for FNC

Reading the New York magazine cover story on the cable news channels, one can’t help but notice that it appears as though Fox News Channel is above it all. In a sense, it is. As the top network, FNC always has a target on its back, at the same time, it does not have the need to constantly change or adapt like its competition.

As such, the top-rated channel is barely mentioned in the story, but there are some interesting tidbits of information, like intra-network squabbling centered around Glenn Beck:

Fox, meanwhile, seems on the verge of winning an election with the help of a movement—the tea party—it did much to create. But it, too, is increasingly riven by schisms that mirror those in the Republican Party itself. Read more

Fox News Channel Pregnancies: Is there something in the water?

FNC contributor Rebbecca Diamond is pregnant. She was host of “Happy Hour” on FBN, which was canceled in June. Anchor for both FNC and WNYW, Heather Nauert, posted on her Facebook page that she is pregnant again. Her first child was born in October of last year. TVNewser learned in August that entertainment reporter Courtney Friel is pregnant. Reena Ninan, Middle-Eastern Correspondent, is pregnant with her first child.

The weather machine Janice Dean is pregnant with her second child. She recently tweeted: @janicedeanfox: “Felt the baby move this weekend! I have a feeling he’s going to be a kicker! :)

Fox News confirms all of the above pregnancies. And, I witnessed three pregnancies at the assignment desk during my time at FNC.

Greta Van Susteren Interviews Bob Woodward

Last night Fox News Channel anchor Greta Van Susteren interviewed authior and journalist Bob Woodward over his latest book, Obama’s Wars.

The interview finally happened after a bit of controversy. Last week Van Susteren canceled the Woodward interview because his publisher wouldn’t send her  review copy. Two days later, after a call from Woodward and a specially-delivered copy, the interview was back on.

Unless you are active in the TV news blogosphere, you never would have guessed there was behind the scenes wrangling:

For Fox News, Having Candidates on the Payroll is a Double-Edged Sword

In a lengthy, well-reported piece for Politico today, Jonathan Martin and Keach Hagey write about four possible Republican candidates for President… who also happen to be on the Fox News payroll as contributors.

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee are all rumored to be in the running for the nomination, and all have contributor deals with the cable channel.

For FNC, the good news is that they become the exclusive place to see some major newsmakers like Palin. On the other hand, it brings up an ethical dilemma for some employees in the news division of the network:

Greta Van Susteren Un-Cancels Bob Woodward Interview

Earlier this week Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren canceled a scheduled interview with journalist Bob Woodward about his new book Obama’s Wars. Van Susteren said the publisher wouldn’t be able to get her a review copy in time, and she would rather cancel the interview than go in unprepared.

Yesterday, Van Susteren once again took to GretaWire with an update. It seems Woodward called ehr and promised to get a review copy to her ASAP:

I thanked Bob for the call and said – since I now will have the book with time to read it  - that I would like to do the interview as planned.  He said that I did not have to do the interview  (that he was not calling in essence to put pressure on me) but I want to do the interview and he agreed.

Don’t you just love a happy ending?

Still, Van Susteren could have secured a copy the way the other networks did: by buying a copy from a bookstore willing to waive the embargo on the sale date.
