Stephen A. Smith Schools The Class Of 2011

In terms of journalists as commencement speakers, Stephen A. Smith would easily make my top five.

The blunt ESPN contributor gave the commencement speech at Winston Salem State University Saturday and dropped some knowledge for the class of 2011:

“If you want to be somebody, you’ve got to annihilate the competition,” said Smith, who graduated from WSSU in 1991. “Anything less is a waste of your time and a waste for the people who believe in you.”

And once you give the world your all, “you have to do it over and over and over again,” he said.

“I’m in no mood to mince words,” he said in the commencement speech from the podium.

He told the graduates to look up in the stands and wave to their parents and family. Read more

Jim Rome Invading Lopez Tonight On Tuesday

“The Jungle” is set to invade Lopez Tonight on Tuesday.

Nationally syndicated sports talk show host Jim Rome will sit down with George Lopez on his TBS late night talk show.

“I’ll be appearing tomorrow on Lopez Tonight, 12/11c TBS. Fired up!” Rome tweeted on Monday morning.

With a 15-year run as a nationally syndicated sports talk show host and two stints on ESPN, I’m surprised Rome hasn’t made his way through the talk show circuit prior to this (That’s if we can actually consider Lopez Tonight a legitimate talk show).

Time Warner Cable, Disney Near ESPN Deal

ESPN3 logoTime Warner Cable and Disney are close to a new deal to keep the ESPN networks and local ABC stations on the cable provider’s service, the New York Post’s Claire Atkinson reports.

The carriage negotiations threatened to result in Time Warner Cable subscribers losing ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews and ABC stations, among other channels, if the two sides did not come to a new agreement by September 2, when the previous agreement expires.

Sports Business Daily‘s John Ourand reports that the new deal will likely include carriage of the ESPN3 broadband channel for TWC’s broadband subscribers.
