The Ticker: Digital, Social, Jesus

  • The RTDNA will once again be a part of next month’s NAB Show. On April 9, several news executives will be on a panel called Ethics in the Era of Social Media Reporting. It’s all part of a full day of programming for news directors at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

  • The film adaptation of Bill O’Reilly‘s best-seller “Killing Jesus” will now be a four-hour miniseries. Nat Geo will air ”Killing Jesus” in the summer of 2015. The network also aired the book-to-film adaptations of O’Reilly’s “Killing Lincoln” and “Killing Kennedy.”

TVNewsers Head to South by Southwest

SXSWSouth by Southwest Interactive starts today (the music portion starts Monday) and various tvnewsers will be there.

MSNBC’s Alex Wagner will be a on a panel today. “Way Too Early” host Thomas Robertsand MSNBC.com executive editor Richard Wolffe sit on a panel Tuesday. (A TVNewser tipster spotted Wolfe on an Austin-bound JetBlue flight this morning enjoying his Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.) JJ Ramberg, host of Your Business, will be on a panel of business reporters and editors on Tuesday as well.

CNN will have correspondent Laurie Segall and editorial folks on the ground at the conference, but no public-facing presence this year. During 2012′s SXSW, an Austin restaurant became “CNN Grill.”

Bloomberg TV’s Emily Chang is moderating a fireside chat with AOL co-founder Steve Case on Saturday.

Fox News will also be sending a correspondent to the conference. HLN, which recently rebranded itself as the “TV home of social media,” won’t have a presence at SXSW this year. ABC News won’t be sending a correspondent this year.

Kara Swisher of Re/code, which is backed by the NBCU News Group, will be on a technology journalism panel on Monday.

NBC News Partners with NowThis News

NBCPeacockThe NBCUniversal News Group is taking a minority stake in NowThis News, a short-form video news network built for mobile and social users. NowThis News and NBCU News Group producers will collaborate on projects based out of NowThis News’s New York studio.

“We know that news consumption among younger audiences continues to grow, but in order to reach that audience, we need to continue to create video for the platforms they use most. NowThis News does exactly that — delivering relevant news stories for the mobile and social platforms that resonate with this audience,” said Patricia Fili-Krushel, Chairman of the NBCUniversal News Group.

NowThisNewsNowThis News was co-founded by Ken Lerer of Lerer Ventures in the summer of 2012 as Planet Daily. The site relaunched a few months later as NowThis News and counted ABC News, CNN and Washington Post executives in its leadership ranks. In addition to the NBCU news, NowThis News has named Sean Mills, president and Ashish Patel, as VP of Social Media. Mills had been president of The Onion, while Patel joins from VICE where he was head of social media.

The partnership comes less than two weeks after the NBCU News Group announced an investment and content partnership with Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg‘s new venture.

Chemistry With NBC Sealed Re/code Deal for Walt Mossberg, Kara Swisher

recode304With the announcement that they’ve partnered with NBC to establish the technology-focused site Re/Code, co-CEO”s Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher told The Wrap that chemistry was key in choosing the peacock network.

“We wanted a media company and the news part of a media company,” Mossberg said.  “You realize how important chemistry is to your comfort level. Pat took personal ownership of this. Terry was in. In the end we had a bidding war between NBC and another media company. We made the decision we felt most comfortable with.”

Kara Swisher, Walt Mossberg Team up with NBC for Re/code

recodeFollowing their split with Dow Jones, digital dynamos Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg and their team are partnering with the NBCUniversal News Group for their new venture called Revere Digital. Swisher and Mossberg are the co-CEOs of the new, technology-focused media company which will publish under the name Re/code . Windsor Media will also join Revere as an investing partner.

As part of the deal Swisher, Mossberg and other Revere journalists will appear across all of the News Group properties including CNBC, MSNBC, “Today,” and “Nightly News with Brian Williams.” CNBC will become Revere’s media partner for its global conferences. The first “Code” conference is set for late May in Southern California.

Mossberg and Swisher formerly partnered with Dow Jones for the AllThingsD site and conferences. They split in September when the two sought to go out on their own, with a partner.

The WebNewser Ticker: NBC-D, ABC-Yahoo, CNN Mobile

  • NBCU is close to acquiring part of All Things D, the tech news and event company that is leaving its home at Dow Jones. The WSJ reports NBCUniversal will have a minority stake in the new Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher venture.

  • October marked the 21st straight month that for the Yahoo-ABC News Network as the No. 1 news site. The sites had 82 million unique visitors, a +16% advantage over No. 2 CNN with 70 million.

  • CNN Digital’s mobile platforms had their biggest month ever in September. The sites brought in more than 32 million users making CNN the No. 1 mobile news source for 67 consecutive months.

Things the New York Giants Watch

Secretariat. Really?

Call us crazy, but we really can’t see the New York Giants getting excited about watching a movie staring a horse on their cross-country flight, even if it is unusual. According to the New York Post, “although this film is currently in first-run theaters – which means normally it would not be available to be shown on a charter flight – a special request was made to Disney through actress Kate Mara.”

We’re talking about a football team comprised of grown men not some pee-wee squad on a bus trip, right? At least the G-Men will have an excuse if they come out flat against the Seattle Seahawks.
