Rupert Murdoch on Fox News, Fox Sports 1

Rupert_Murdoch_2011_Shankbone_3Rupert Murdoch sits down for an extensive Q+A with Fortune‘s Pattie Sellers, weighing in on the recent news that his son Lachlan Murdoch will re-join News Corp. and 21st Century Fox, his divorce from Wendi Deng and the possible Republican Presidential candidates of 2016. He also talked about Fox News and the recently-launched Fox Sports 1:

Does it bother you at all, Rupert, that there is a view that Fox News has contributed in a big way to the political discontent in the U.S., degraded the political process, and maybe, in spotlighting the Tea Party, even hurt the Republican Party? I think it has absolutely saved it. It has certainly given voice and hope to people who didn’t like all that liberal championing thrown at them on CNN. By the way, we don’t promote the Tea Party. That’s bullshit. We recognize their existence.

Your new Fox Sports 1 network is a very big bet. Well, it’s a pretty big bet. We certainly expect to lose a couple hundred million dollars for a year or two, and then we expect it to turn, and we’ll gradually make it into a major alternative to ESPN. We’re not going to put ESPN out of business.

Why does ESPN need an alternative? I think the public deserves choice.

Lachlan Murdoch Returns to Family Business

Lachlan_8.17Lachlan Murdoch, the elder son of Rupert Murdoch, is back in the family business.

Murdoch has been named non executive chairman at both News Corp. and 21st Century Fox. The 42-year-old has been a director of both companies, but effectively left the media empire in 2005 where he had been deputy chief operating officer directly responsible for News Corp.’s U.S. television stations group and publishing assets.

After Murdoch left News Corp., Roger Ailes, the co-founder and chairman of Fox News Channel, was named chairman of News Corporation’s  (now 21st Century Fox’s) television stations group

Moguls, Journalists Descend On Sun Valley For Media/Technology Confab

This week, the world’s media, entertainment and technology moguls are converging on Sun Valley, Idaho for the annual Allen & Company shindig. What happens in Sun Valley usually stays in Sun Valley, but according to a number of reporters in attendance, we can glean a few things.

For starters, CBS News anchor Charlie Rose, NBC News’ Tom Brokaw and CNN’s Erin Burnett are all attending, with Rose and Brokaw scheduled to moderate (secret) panels. CNBC’s Julia Boorstin, FBN’s Dennis Kneale and Bloomberg TV’s Jon Erlichman are getting as close as they can to cover the action for their networks.

In terms of moguls, all the usual suspects are there: 21st Century Fox CEO Rupert Murdoch, along with sons Lachlan Murdoch and James Murdoch (above), Disney’s Bob Iger, ESPN’s John Skipper, Comcast’s Brian Roberts, CBS’ Les Moonves, Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook and IAC’s Barry Diller among many, many others.
