Isaac Lee Praises Fusion’s ‘Comprehensive, Truly Distinct’ World Cup Coverage

Fusion World Cup celebrationFusion staffers gathered in Miami last night to celebrate the end of the World Cup and welcome back the team who traveled to Brazil to lead the network’s coverage, including “Soccer Gods” hosts Nando Vila and Simon Carr and VP of news Mark Lima (pictured). In a note to staffers yesterday afternoon, Fusion CEO Isaac Lee called the World Cup coverage “comprehensive, truly distinct, and full of personality across our television and digital platforms”:

Nando and Simon did a terrific job anchoring our coverage in primetime with “The Soccer Gods” live from Copacabana Beach every night.  As two avid fans, they brought a level of passion, excitement, and humor to our coverage that struck exactly the right tone for Fusion. While they shined in front of the camera, it wouldn’t have been possible without Zach Rigg and Pablo Sanchis behind the scenes making them look good!

Fusion not only delivered a unique take on the action unfolding on the pitch every day, but it was the stories from the streets of Brazil that helped us stand out. From Mariana van Zeller watching the Brazil v Chile match in a favela with one of Brazil’s largest, most violent drug gangs to Pedro Andrade scoring interviews with some of the biggest soccer stars of all time includingPele and Marta. Jorge Ramos and Leon Krauze also contributed their unique insights both on “Soccer Gods” and by live-blogging several matches on Soccer.Fusion.net.

With the World Cup over and the midterm elections on the horizon, Fusion is building up its booking unit. Capital New York’s Alex Weprin has more on the new hires that will lead the effort to secure interviews with big-name guests.

The Ticker: Moore, Greta, Acevedo & Krauze

  • Alison Moore has been named GM/EVP of TV Everywhere for NBCUniversal. In the new role, Moore will build a team to drive the consumer experience and develop marketing and strategy across NBCU networks. Moore is the GM/EVP of Daily Candy, which NBCU’s is shutting down.

  • Greta Van Susteren will interview Virginia congressional candidate Mike Dickinson. The democrat has promised a “war” on Fox News if elected. The interview airs on tomorrow night’s “On the Record” at 7pmET.

  • Two anchors from the same network are taking opposing views on who’s to blame for illegal immigrant deportations. Univision anchor Enrique Acevedo and Fusion host León Krauze wrote dueling op-eds, then took the debate to Twitter.

Fusion Added to Dish Network, Shifts Programming

Jorge RamosFour months in, Fusion, the joint venture between ABC News and Univision, is shaking up its programming while adding 14 million more homes. Dish Network will now carry the news and lifestyle channel geared toward millennials, making it available in about 35 million homes, well on the way to its goal of being in 60 million homes in its first 5 years.

Among the programming changes: the morning show moves to the evenings and two daily programs will scale back to weeklies. The changes come on the same day Univision and Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos signed a contract extension keeping him with Fusion through the 2016 election. “Even though Jorge has been on television longer than Walter Cronkite, many Americans are discovering Jorge for the first time now that he has a program in English,” says Fusion CEO Isaac Lee in a note to staff.

Ramos, who co-anchors the evening newscast on Univision, will scale back his nightly Fusion show “America” to Tuesday nights, allowing more time for field interviews and transforming the program from a daily newscast to a weekly news magazine. Leon Krauze‘s “Open Source” will also scale back from nightly to weekly. The move comes as Krauze, who is also the main anchor at Univision’s LA station KMEX, gears up for Fusion’s coverage of the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

“The Morning Show,” which Lee says “has exceeded our expectations,” will be rebranded and will now air at 8pmET and ”AM Tonight” anchored by Alicia Menendez moves to 9pmET.

Fusion CEO Lauds Network’s First Month, Tells Staff to Reach ‘Beyond the Conventional’

Fusion304x200Fusion launched one month ago today, and TVNewser has obtained an internal email network CEO Isaac Lee wrote to the staff praising while urging continuing innovation.

“Our content continues to drive a national conversation,” Lee wrote. “Fusion is already playing a prominent role in shaping our nation’s dialogue.”

Fusion, which is not in enough homes to be publicly rated by Nielsen, is depending on Web traffic. Lee’s email highlights Fusion.net’s traffic—half of which comes from mobile devices—as well as Fusion TV’s headline-grabbing interviews.

Some of those interviews Lee refers to were “Glee” star Alex Newell taking on Bill O’Reilly for calling him “dopey” and an on-air feud between hosts Alicia Menendez and Leon Krauze over who gets to interview actress Jennifer Lawrence first — neither has so far.

He also warned employees to not pat themselves on the back too much:

“We must remember we are one month into a very long journey and we cannot stop here.  The challenges we faced in the days and weeks leading up to launch have not gone away, but the last month has shown me that we are more than ready to tackle them.”

Fusion Anchors Feud Over Dream Guest Jennifer Lawrence

Fusion is just three weeks old, and already two of its anchors are getting into it. Leon Krauze has made it very clear that Jennifer Lawrence is his “interview holy grail,” spending a few minutes on his show each week pleading for her to come on “Open Source.” This week Alicia Menendez jumped into the fray, telling Krauze to back off Lawrence. “Let’s be honest: if Jennifer Lawrence is going to be on any show on Fusion, it’s ‘AM Tonight,” Menendez said. Fusion Launching October 28 With Nightly Jorge Ramos Program, Satire Block

Fusion, the upcoming cable channel from ABC News and Univision, will launch Monday October 28, the companies say. The channel will launch on a number of pay-TV operators, including Cablevision, Charter and Cox.

Fusion will have a familiar face leading its primetime lineup: “Noticiero Univision” and “Al Punto” anchor Jorge Ramos, who will host “America with Jorge Ramos,” every weeknight at 8 PM. it will be Ramos’ first English-language newscast. At 10 PM weeknights the channel will air “Open Source with Leon Krauze,” a live one-hour talk show covering both serious and silly news.

There will also be a nightly satire block, led by former “Daily Show” EP David Javerbaum. The first show in the block will be “Sports Bar,” a sports/comedy talk show. The channel is also working with the Jim Henson Company and animation company ShadowMachine on another program for the block. Yes, Fusion may be getting a nightly dose of Muppets.

The afternoon and early evening will feature programs anchored by Alicia Menendez at 7 PM and “D.N.A.” (Real Name Derrick N. Ashong) at 6 PM. The weekends will feature original specials and documentaries.

Importantly, the channel also seems to be seeking a slightly broader audience than just young Latinos. It now plans to focus on Millennials more generally, in addition to Latinos.

“We believe our programs – visually compelling, creatively produced and laced with humor and irreverence – will resonate with Latinos and non-Latinos alike,” said Beau Ferrari, acting President for Fusion in a statement. “Fusion’s unique combination of news, satire and original series is a completely new offering for the most exciting and fastest-growing group of young people in the country.”
