Abusive fans from own team force Man U player to quit Twitter — after 97 minutes

A fair share of people have reservations about taking the leap and joining Twitter. They think it’s narcissistic or annoying or pointless, and it can be all those things to varying degrees. But few people finally join Twitter only to find themselves pulling the rip cord an hour and seven minutes later — and fewer still do it because they were taking crap from fans of their own team.

Enter Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson, 23, who was bullied off the social media cite by rabid (insane?) fans who told him he wasn’t fit to play for the team.

“You are an abysmal excuse for a footballer,” wrote one fan. “You’re a one trick pony — a s*** one at that. What (Sir Alex Ferguson) sees in you I don’t know.”

Another added: “Nothing would make me happier than if we sold you this summer. You’re probably a nice bloke, but an awful footballer.”

They must have said worse things than that, no? I mean, the last poster even qualified his insult, saying “You’re probably a nice bloke, but…”
As Internet insults go, these seem relatively tame. Perhaps Gibson was simply trying to set the Guinness Book of World Records mark for shortest Twitter stint by a Man U player.

ESPN Has Best Year Ever

ESPN’s dominance in the cable television sporting landscape continues to grow.

The Worldwide Leader announced its best-ever fiscal year ratings. According to a fawning release, “The network averaged 858,000 households on a 24-hour basis, breaking the record set last year (809,000) with an increase of six percent.” ESPN also averaged a 0.9 total day rating, its highest since 1990 when there were way fewer options for sports on television.

Some highlights of the year:

  • Monday Night Football was up 18 percent from FY09 (10.5 vs. 8.9 rating)
  • The 2010 NFL Pro Bowl aired on ESPN and delivered an 8.2 rating
  • Regular-season college football was up slightly from FY09, with 4 more games
