Cumulus Media Plans To Drop Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh

Two of the biggest names in talk radio (one of whom also happens to be a big name in TV news) may be losing distribution on hundreds of radio stations. According to Politico’s Dylan Byers, Cumulus Media plans to drop Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity at the end of this year, after failing to come to terms on new contracts with the hosts.

The decision comes after negotiations between Cumulus and Premiere Networks, the division of Clear Channel that distributes Limbaugh and Hannity’s shows, broke down due to disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights, the source said. Cumulus is known to drive a hard bargain on costs, and Clear Channel is known to seek top dollar for big names.

A source in the agent community tells TVNewser that “this is a public negotiating tactic, it’s about sending a message.” In other words, don’t be surprised if Limbaugh, Hannity or both men remain on Cumulus.

TV Talkers Make Talkers List of Heavy Hundred

Ed Schultz spent a little time on his MSNBC show last night talking about Talkers, the radio industry magazine and its 2012 Heavy Hundred list. Rush Limbaugh is #1 on the list, followed by FNC’s Sean Hannity and Michael Savage at #3. “Well, we all know his history and what happened here on MSNBC,” said Schultz of Savage.

“And I’m right ahead of my good friend, Laura Ingraham,” said Schultz sarcastically. Unless this is how you refer to your “good friend.”

Schultz joins Joe Madison and Thom Hartmann as the “three lefties in the top ten!”

Former Fox News host Glenn Beck is #9 on the list.

The Ticker: Ed Schultz, Paula Zahn, Ann Rule

  • Investigation Discovery anchor Paula Zahn is moderating a panel discussion on the Violence Against Women Act at the White House today. Vice President Biden will host the event, which will also be streamed live here starting at 11 AM.
  • CBS News’ “48 Hours Mystery” is teaming up with famed crime author Ann Rule to try and shed light on a 1998 murder. The death of Ronda Reynolds was originally ruled a suicide, but there appeared to be more to the story,. Rule ended up writing a book about the case. The story airs on “48 Hours Mystery” Saturday night at 10 PM.

Ashleigh Banfield to Rush Limbaugh: ‘Shut Your Cake Hole!’

On  CNN’s “Early Start” this morning, Ashleigh Banfield had some words for Rush Limbaugh: “Shut your cake hole!”

“You can agree or disagree on contraception. That’s not the issue. You cannot call women you disagree with sluts or prostitutes. I was called a slut by Michael Savage, a conservative radio talk show host,” said Banfield.

Banfield is referring to a 2003 incident when she was an MSNBC anchor and Savage hosted a short-lived MSNBC weekend show. On his radio show, Savage called Banfield, “The mind slut with a big pair of glasses that they sent to Afghanistan.”

“Michael Savage didn’t like giving the voice to some of the Arab instigators in the Middle East,” said Banfield this morning. “That made me a slut.”

Nine years later, Banfield asks, “What does it take? What year is this, Limbaugh? It ends now. Cut it out!”

Radio Host Mark Levin to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews: ‘I’m going to drag your ass into federal court’

Talk radio host Mark Levin is fuming mad at MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, so mad that he has threatened to sue the MSNBC host.

On Monday’s “Hardball” Matthews said Levin exemplified the heightened political discourse on talk radio:

People like Mark Levin, Michael Savage, for example who every time you listen to them are furious, furious at the left with anger that just builds and builds in their voice and by the time they go to commercial, they’re just in some rage, every night, with ugly talk. Ugly sounding talk. And it never changes.

Levin — an attorney who heads the Landmark Legal Foundation and is a former official of the U.S. Justice Department — said on his radio show Wednesday, “I’m waiting for an allegation that is very specific against me because I’m going to sue.”

Like Matthews, Levin had his own list: “Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough – test me. Test me. David Frum, you little weasel, test me. All of you.”

An MSNBC representative told TVNewser, “We won’t dignify his outlandish comments with a response.” Interesting note: Michael Savage had a short-lived weekend run on MSNBC in 2003.

Glenn Beck Beats Glenn Beck

In a 9pmET face-off against himself, Glenn Beck (on CNN) topped Glenn Beck (on Headline News) last night.

Filling in on Larry King Live on CNN, Beck drew 269,000 A25-54 demo viewers and 950,000 Total Viewers. His 9pmET show on HLN (which has its first airing at 7pm) drew 118,000 in the demo and 393,000 Total Viewers.

There’s also a controversy brewing about one of Beck’s bookings on the King broadcast. Beck got the first interview with conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage following Savage’s comments about autism. At one point, he called autistic kids “morons.” You can imagine what parents of autistic kids think of Savage. Anyway, that clip is after the jump.

But the controversy wasn’t about what Savage said, but about a guest who may have been bumped in favor of Savage. An emailer writes to TVNewser that radio talker Ed Schultz has gone on his nationally syndicated show telling listeners he was scheduled to be on Larry King last night, but was canceled about an hour ahead of the broadcast. The emailer writes, “Schultz is playing this up as a big insult and that Beck has had it in for Schultz for a while.”
