‘Today’ Airs Footage Of The Wrong Black Quarterback

NBC’s “Today” got its African American quarterbacks confused this morning.

The program had an interview with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who has a new memoir out. Vick was one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, and almost lost it all when he was convicted for his involvement in an illegal dog-fighting ring. After getting out of prison he was given a second chance at football by the Eagles.

Given his superstar athlete status, and his time in the news for the dog-fighting, Vick is one of the most recognizable people in the U.S. That did not stop NBC from showing b-roll of a completely different quarterback, however.

WATCH:

The quarterback in that video is not Vick, but rather former Eagles QB Vince Young (as first noted by Guyism) Update: Guyism now reports that it was Jerrod Johnson, not Young. While they are both African American, and both played for the same team, Vick wears number seven, not eight, and Vick is (quite famously) a lefty, not a righty, as seen in the clip.

Jeter Splits from Minka Kelly

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Charlie’s Angels actress Minka Kelly have reportedly split up after three years, news that wouldn’t be relevant here if one half of this equation weren’t a future Hall of Fame shortstop with a track record of dating some of contemporary society’s most attractive actresses and singers. Jeter has been linked to Scarlett Johansson, Jordana Brewster, Mariah Carey, among others.

Recent speculation said Jeter and Kelly were headed for marriage, but that seems less likely now. Rest assured Jeter and Kelly’s faces will be on the covers of People, Us Weekly and numerous other tabloids this week (“What happened!?!?”), not to mention the back page of tomorrow’s New York tabloid newspapers. Obviously we’re most eager to hear what Michael Kay has to say about the matter.

Orioles Announcer Flanagan Reportedly Commits Suicide

Former Cy Young Award winner Mike Flanagan, a longtime pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles who later ascended to a top executive position with the club and in recent years served as a television commentator, reportedly committed suicide Wednesday afternoon, “despondent over what he considered a false perception from a community he loved of his role in the team’s prolonged failure,” according to WBAL-TV sports director Gerry Sandusky.

Good lord, that’s heartbreaking.

Flanagan’s body was reportedly found outside his home in Monkton, Md. The cause of death has not yet been announced. A member of the Orioles Hall of Fame, Flanagan won 167 games over an 18-year career, including 23 games in his 1979 Cy Young campaign.

From 2002-08 he shared or held the top baseball executive position in the Orioles organization. During that time Flanagan, according to those closest to him, struggled with not being able to do the job the way he wanted to do it, Sandusky said.

Orioles Managing Partner Peter Angelos issued the following statement last night.: “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening. In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club, I extend my condolences to his wife, Alex; and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall.”

RIP, Mike.

Leave it to Berman to stare in the camera.

This new commercial could be hilariously funny or an absolute train wreck. Can’t wait.

Video: Francesa Hides the Ice Cream

Mike Francesa seems rather abashed when someone at YES tells him that viewers can see that he’s buoying his blood sugar with some ice cream goodness. Don’t be ashamed of the cup, Mike.

Radio Host Sues L.A. Angels For Alleged Racism

Radio host David Smith filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Angels, claiming he was fired allegedly for racial reasons, according to Reuters:

“In a complaint filed in California Superior Court earlier this month, David Smith alleged that the Angels Baseball Foundation rigged a singles promotion to ensure a black woman did not win and that Angels employees regularly made racist remarks.

Smith claimed that the Angels did not allow another employee on a radio show because he sounded “too black” and “too ghetto” for an Orange County audience. His complaint also stated that co-workers said negative results were to be “expected when a Jew is hired as baseball’s commissioner.” Read more

New York Mets Catcher Quits Twitter Due To Fans

If Josh Thole of the New York Mets thought the media in the Big Apple was critical, think again.

The struggling catcher quit Twitter this week after fans took to the social media tool to express their feelings on his slow start.

“I thought this was supposed to be fun,” Thole told The Star-Ledger Wednesday. “They’re ruthless on there.”

The tweets ranged from the usual colorful name-calling to my personal favorite – - hitting advice.

Based on his .239 average and .577 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, Thole could use all the advice he can get at this point.

Peyton Hillis Is The New Face Of Madden NFL 12

Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis is the face of Madden NFL 12, easily defeating Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick with 66 percent of the vote.

The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon on ESPN’s SportsNation, where both Hillis and Vick were on location in Bristol, Conn.

“I just want to tell them thanks and I’m going to play my best for them,” the No. 10 seed Hillis said after the announcement. This was the year that fans were allowed to vote on the cover athlete.

As for the Madden curse, the Browns bruiser isn’t worried.

“For people to believe in this so-called curse, I can’t wait to prove people wrong,” he said. “From what I believe and where I am in my spiritual life, it would be good to prove them wrong in that sense.”

Update: Braves' Roger McDowell coach accused of using gay slurs, apologizes

During a press conference that streamed live this afternoon on TMZ.com, attorney Gloria Allred and her client, a father of twin 9-year-old girls, accused Atlanta Braves coach Roger McDowell of directing gay slurs at the father during Saturday’s game in San Francisco. McDowell was accused of making a homophobic remark and then using a baseball bat to simulate gay sex. McDowell also allegedly told the father and two other male fans, “Are you three giving it to each other in the a**?” When the father confronted McDowell from the stands, McDowell reportedly responded by saying, “Kids don’t f**king belong at the baseball park” … and then approached the man with a baseball bat, saying, “How much are your teeth worth?”

Soon after the press conference, McDowell apologized for the incident, saying, “I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions. ”

A rep for the Braves released an additional statement, saying, “We are concerned by these allegations and the behavior described by a witness today. This in no way represents the Braves organization and the conduct we expect of our employees.”

No word yet from Major League Baseball on what actions, if any, will be taken towards McDowell. And no word, either, on what exactly the fans were saying to him. There are of course two sides to every story, so let’s get the full account before we crucify McDowell alone. Have to imagine he didn’t decide to go ballistic for no reason.
