Piers Morgan Hires Away Barbara Walters’ Booker

Katie Nelson Thomson has left ABC News and joins CNN as senior broadcast producer of “Piers Morgan Tonight.”

Thomson spent 15 years at ABC News, working primarily with Barbara Walters. She’s produced interviews for “20/20″ and for the Barbara Walters specials, including Walters’s 1999 interview with Monica Lewinsky — watched by 70 million viewers, the highest-rated news event broadcast by a single network.

Says Jonathan Wald, EP of “Piers Morgan Tonight”: “(Katie) brings unmatched experience and leadership in the booking and producing of big-name interviews and she will be instrumental in helping lead a talented team of bookers and producers.”

Ziegler: “Monica Lewinsky Never Dreamed of Doing to Bill Clinton Some of the Things Brian Williams Did to Barack Obama”

ziegler_6-4b.jpgToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we were joined by filmmaker John Ziegler. He’s currently touring the country (in Boston today) with his film “Media Malpractice,” about the 2008 presidential election.

What does he thinks of media coverage since Pres. Obama has taken office? “I think the answer is pretty clear, especially over the past 24 hours,” he said. “The speech that he gave this morning in Egypt was just flabbergasting, and of course, as always, is being greeted by 80% of the media as another gift from the Messiah.”

Of NBC’s “Inside the Obama White House” special, Ziegler didn’t mince words. “Monica Lewinsky never dreamed of doing to Bill Clinton some of the things Brian Williams did to Barack Obama during that two-part special,” said Ziegler. “It was beyond glowing.”

Also discussed: plans for his next documentary, what he thought was the worst part of the Couric/Palin interview and whether he purposely says provocative things to draw attention to his films.

Gibson To Anchor Special Hour of 20/20

On Friday, August 10th, “World News” anchor Charlie Gibson will go primetime with his special report: “Pastor to Power: Billy Graham and the Presidents.” The 20/20 special takes an indepth look at “the world’s most famous evangelist” and his special access to the world’s most powerful men: the presidents of the United States.

Look for Gibson’s “remarkable, exclusive round table discussion with Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.”

And in a revealing interview, Hillary Clinton confides that during the worst days of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, she turned to Graham. “He was someone who could understand both Bill and me, and there aren’t many people who can,” she said.
