The Ticker: Blago Bump, King-Powell, Realty Check…

> Gawker obtained internal emails related to a December Today show booking of Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Blago was bumped for breaking news stories, including “leno getting his own show at 10pm.” It just so happens the Feds arrested Blago that same day.

> Gen. Colin Powell will be on CNN’s Larry King Live tonight at 9pmET for the hour. Topics: the Henry Louis Gates/Cambridge police situation, Obama @ 6 months, and the future of the GOP.

> CNBC’s Dennis Kneale hosts “Realty Check,” a CNBC Reports special tonight at 8pmET. The real estate special will focus on the markets, mortgage rates and whether now is the time to buy or sell.

Geist Talks Obama, Blago, Brackets on the Menu

geist_4-6.bmpJoining us on the Media Menu podcast today was MSNBC’s Willie Geist, minutes after leaving the Morning Joe set.

We talked about the big news story of the week — President Obama’s trip to Europe. “Every step of the way it was to show a more humble President and a more humble United States, and if that was his goal, he certainly achieved it everywhere he went,” says Geist. But: “I think a lot of this was cosmetic. I mean, obviously they weren’t going to solve the world financial crisis with a one day summit, but visually, the optics of it, looks pretty good for him.”

We also discussed a favorite podcast topic — former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. “In my world, the Blago story never goes away,” said Geist.

So does Geist think MSNBC could have a spot for Blago? “As you can tell by watching the cable news landscape, it’s okay to be completely insane, you can still have a TV show,” he said. “But sometimes I worry like where he’d be for the conference call, or wouldn’t show up for the show.”

Also discussed: Joe/Mika “tiffs,” how the newspaper industry can be saved and Geist’s predictions for tonight’s NCAA finals (and his “highly, highly illegal” NCAA pool).

Rodriguez Talks Blago, Sully on Today’s “Menu”

rodriguez_2-4.jpgCBS’ The Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez joined us this morning on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast.

Last week Rodriguez interviewed Gov. Rod Blagojevich in one of his first sit-downs of the major media tour. “Everyone here thought he was incredibly charming,” says Rodriguez. But “a lot of people would say he’s an interesting case study in delusion and self-destruction.”

Monday she has another big get — hero pilot Captain Sully (Chesley Sullenberger). “It’s just going to be good, warm, happy television which I think we all welcome these days,” Rodriguez says.

But just like Blago, Rodriguez’ interview with Sully is just one of many for the guest during that day. So how does she prepare? “I have to find a way to make it different, I have to find something that they didn’t have,” she says.

Rodriguez also reflects on her one year in the Early Show anchor chair (“I’m so excited to see who I get to talk to tomorrow”), gives her thoughts on the New York Times’ possibly charging for content and jokes about pulling “the old Katie Couric-Sarah Palin“.

Maggie Rodriguez on Tomorrow’s “Menu”

rodriguez_2-3.jpgWe’re joined by CBS’ The Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez tomorrow on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu.

Last week Rodriguez interviewed Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and on Monday she talks to hero pilot Captain Sully (Chesley Sullenberger). She also just celebrated her one-year anniversary as Early Show anchor.

Geist Talks Blago as TV Star on Today’s “Menu”: “I Think He’s Too Crazy”

geist_2-2.jpgMorning Joe‘s Willie Geist joined us this morning on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast, minutes after leaving the MSNBC set. In fact, he was still wearing his studio make-up (“Even when I’m not on TV, I like to wear make-up for interviews,” he said).

Does Geist think Gov. Rod Blagojevich will be the next big media star? “I think he’s too crazy,” he said.

We also talked about last night’s Super Bowl — and NBC breaking records for ad sales. “It’s hard to imagine worse economic times, and people [are] still jumping at the chance to throw down three million bucks for 30 seconds,” said Geist.

One of the Super Bowl ads people are talking about today is Pepsi’s Bob Dylan/will.i.am ad. Willie liked it, but “I’m not sure Will-dot-I-dot-M is the voice of this generation. Maybe he is and I don’t know about it.”

Also discussed: Sarah Palin‘s political future, Caroline Kennedy‘s media meltdown and more.

You can listen to the podcast live every morning at 9amET on BlogTalkRadio.com/mediabistro and call in at 646-929-0321. You can also subscribe to the iTunes feed of the podcast by clicking the “iTunes” button.

D.L. Hughley Offers Blago a Job

BlagoDL_1.29.jpgAs he made the rounds in New York earlier this week, Gov. Rod Blagojevich stopped in at CNN to chat with D.L. Hughley. Despite his ouster from office yesterday, the interview will still happen on Hughley’s show tomorrow night. Insiders tell us producers will make clear the interview took place before Blago’s impeachment and removal from office.

As for the interview, Hughley sipped from his “I Love Blagojevich” coffee cup while Blago drank form his “Me Too” mug. Hughley then offered Blago a job:

Hughley: We’re not gonna give up either, and if I don’t work out there I promise you can always come work with me. You can be my correspondent…

Blagojevich: I appreciate it – I’ll do it for free, man, you’re a special guy.

Earlier this week, CNN also released the ratings for D.L. Hughley Breaks News. For the month of January, the 10pmET telecast came in first in A25-54 demo viewers, and second in Total Viewers.

Check out the CNN promo, after the jump…

Cablers Cover Blago Making “Kangaroo Court” Case

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is being impeached, and not, as it may have seemed this week, promoting a book or movie. At least not yet. Today, he’s actually in the Illinois House of Representatives Senate to make his case, and the cablers are giving it wall-to-wall coverage. This may go for awhile. We think the HLN chyron sums it up: “Blagojevich is not testifying, is not under oath, will not have to answer questions.” We’ll be twittering &mash; enjoy!

Haggard Interviews Begin Airing Tonight

haggard_1-28.jpgIf Gov. Rod Blagojevich was the big “get,” early this week, former Evangelical leader Ted Haggard is the big end-of-week get. As we reported yesterday, he’ll be on Good Morning America and Larry King Live tomorrow and CBS’ The Early Show on Friday.

But now you won’t have to wait until tomorrow. ABC News’ Dan Harris sits down with Haggard this afternoon, and it airs tonight on World News and Nightline. Also interviewed are his wife, Gayle, and daughter, Christy.

Tomorrow morning Haggard and his wife will be live on Good Morning America.
