Domain Expires on Bill Simmons' Grantland

Bill SimmonsGrantland debuted on June 8th with a great deal of fanfare in sports writing circles, and has now gone dark just 11 days later, the victim of oversight. Specifically, someone forgot to renew the site’s domain name, which expired June 13, so the site either needs to be renewed or it will be deleted. As of 4:16 p.m., the site looks like this to the right. According to Network Solutions, which owns the domain, “Once a domain name has been renewed, it may take up to 48 hours to be reactivated.”

So even if someone from Grantland (or ESPN.com) runs down to Network Solutions with a handful of quarters right now, there’s no guarantee the site will be back up and running before Tuesday. In the meantime schadenfreude among jealous sportswriters runs wild.

The one thing you don’t want to do is question Hopkins. Both fighters had to be separated after some pushing and shoving. Read more

ESPN Producer Leaves Company Following Arrest

Less than a week after he was arrested for peering into a neighbor’s window while she was getting dressed and masturbating, Neil Goldberg has left ESPN.

ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys confirmed on Monday that Goldberg no longer works for the company.

The 52-year-old Goldberg was a coordinating producer for ESPN’s motorsports coverage.

Goldberg is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Wednesday and faces charges of public indecency, simple trespass, disorderly conduct and breach of peace.

Why the Rangers New TV Contract Makes Sense

Gil Lebreton at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram makes a case that the Texas Rangers might be worth the ridiculous sum of money their new television contract will pay out.

Fox Sports Net agreed to pay the baseball team $1.6 billion (not $3 billion as originally stated) to broadcast games for the next 20 years (not 30 years). That’s almost 100 percent more than the current figure of $45 million per year, but it still makes sense financially for both teams.

From the Rangers perspective, it’s obvious: They make a ton of dollars that will help them sign players, upgrade their franchise, and compete in the American League with teams such as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. (The Yankees mastered the art of subsidizing their pockets with TV money by starting Yes Network, probably the single smartest move made by the late George Steinbrenner.)

The money also works on the other side of the equation. Read more
