‘The View’ Premieres With New Co-Hosts, Queen Barbara Walters

Walters QueenA revamped “The View” premiered this morning with its original co-executive producer sitting in a Queen’s throne getting doused with affection.

“Thank you my pals,” Barbara Walters said as co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Nicolle Wallace, and Rosie Perez looked toward her throne.

“This is wonderful, but it’s unnecessary because of course you have my blessings,” Walters added. “By the way, I was told that I would have a crown,” she concluded, with an off-screen hand then bestowing her with one.

“Hello and welcome to the newer view,” Goldberg said to the audience as the show opened. A returning O’Donnell, not wearing shoes because of her sciatica, updated viewers on her heart attack two years ago and the surgery she had that saved her life. “I’m sitting here with three fabulous women and I’m loving life,” new co-host Rosie Perez said. “I am a Republican, we should get that out of the way,” Nicolle Wallace, former campaign communications adviser to Senator John McCain and Sarah Palin, said. “And I really like her, I swear to God!” O’Donnell responded to the audience’s applause.

Rosie O’Donnell: Look for a More ‘Objective’ View

TheNewViewRehearsals continued today for the new “View,” which debuts Monday. Returning host Rosie O’Donnell says the audition process for the new season, “was very much like the ‘Hunger Games.’”

“I think Whoopi and I were both a little shocked at having to do a chemistry test,” O’Donnell tells Variety. “I don’t know if there’s a way to test that. It felt very negative and competitive.” Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace made the cut.

And Rosie still hasn’t buried the hatchet with one of her former co-hosts, “Fox & Friends’” Elisabeth Hasselbeck:

O’Donnell regularly clashed with former exec producer [Bill] Geddie and Hasselbeck, who exited in 2013. “Elisabeth would go into the dressing room with (Bill) and go over Republican talking points that are sent out every day, and then come out and recite what she had ingested,” O’Donnell says. “I tried to get her to talk more about her own self and how she felt rather than being a robotic pundit.”

Hasselbeck has chosen not to comment on Rosie’s latest comments about her. As for how the new season will compare to seasons’ past:

Nicolle Wallace, Rosie Perez Join ‘The View’

PerezWallace

Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace are the new co-hosts of “The View” joining moderator Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell.

“These are powerful and accomplished women from different walks of life who have had amazing personal and professional experiences. Each brings incredible perspective and information to the table,” said executive producer Bill Wolff. “This mix of smart, vibrant and energetic women is unlike anything else on daytime television.”

Following a career in politics which included working as communications chief for George W. Bush, Wallace joined CBS News as an analyst. She returned to GOP politics in 2008 as senior advisor for the John McCain-Sarah Palin 2008 presidential campaign. In 2012, Wallace signed on with ABC News as an analyst. “I am honored to join the tradition of compelling conversations that has been the signature of ‘The View’ for the better part of two decades,” said Wallace. “I have watched ‘The View’ for many years and now to be seated alongside three women that I have admired is both humbling and incredibly exciting.”

Perez comes from the entertainment world, an actress, director, dancer, and author. “I am beyond thrilled, honored and completely surprised that I’ve been asked to join ‘The View’,” said Perez.  “Knowing that I’ll be in the company of Whoopi, Rosie and Nicolle, three very smart and engaging women that I have an immense amount of respect for, makes it even more unbelievable.”

Last week a new senior production team was announced including Wolff, co-executive producer Brian Balthazar, and director Ashley S. Gorman. The show is also getting a new studio in the ABC headquarters on W. 66th St. which had been home to Katie Couric‘s show. The new season launches Monday, Sept. 15.
