Will Elisabeth Hasselbeck Be the Next Host to Leave ‘The View’?

The future of “The View” co-host Elisabeth Hasselback is up in the air. According to two sources familiar with the matter, Hasselbeck will not be returning to the daytime program next season.

In a statement, a spokesperson for “The View” tells TVNewser, “Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of ‘The View’ and has a long term contract.”

When pressed on whether she would be returning next season, the spokesperson replied, “she has a long term contract.”

A contract certainly provides job security for talent, but as has been shown over and over (see Conan O’Brien vs. NBC), if someone wants there to be changes, changes can and will happen.

Hasselbeck has been a panelist on “The View” since 2003. She has served as a game foil to her co-hosts, representing not only a younger generation of women, but also serving as the show’s resident Republican. Given that the program routinely features discussions about politics, and interviews with newsmakers, she often made her political opinions known.

The news of Hasselbeck’s possible departure comes less than 24 hours after Joy Behar revealed that she will be leaving the show after more than 16 years at the end of the season. Co-creator Barbara Walters is the lone original host. The other co-hosts are Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd.

‘GMA’ Can Thank Sherri Shepherd and Tim Tebow For Helping Break ‘Today’ Show’s 16-Year Winning Streak

If the numbers hold up, “GMA” will beat the “Today” show in total viewers for the first time in more than 16 years. “Today’s” winning streak in younger viewers will be extended to 884 weeks as the show drew 254,000 more A25-54 viewers than “GMA.”

“GMA’s” projected win comes as the show took just two of the five days last week: Wednesday and Friday, and as newly re-signed Matt Lauer took a vacation from “Today.” “Good Morning America” has been winning Wednesday because of the “Dancing with the Stars” afterglow. Last Wednesday that included an in-studio interview with Sherri Shepherd who got the boot Tuesday night. On Wednesday, “GMA” had a 366,000 viewer lead on “Today.” The ABC show has also been winning a Friday here and there. And last Friday the 13th was a good won for the show as it included Robin Roberts‘s interview with New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow and his mom and outdrawing “Today” by 333,000 viewers.

Let’s break down the numbers for the week of April 9, which add up to a 13,000 viewer projected win for “Good Morning America.”

TVNewsers Wear Purple To Show Their ‘Spirit’

People across the country today participated in “Spirit Day,” wearing purple as a sign of support for LGBT youth. The movement, started by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, counted several visible people as champions of the anti-bullying cause: morning anchors, evening anchors and cable anchors on several networks were color-coordinated today.

On the morning shows:

On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts participated, as did Ann Curry and Al Roker on NBC’s “Today.” All four co-hosts on “The View” — Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck — were decked out in purple as well.

Best TwitPics from the WHCD

Washington was buzzing this weekend with the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and associated festivities. TVNewser had coverage of the dinner, the cocktails, and the brunches.

Our colleagues down at FishbowlDC were all over it too. Editors Matt Dornic and Betsy Rothstein talked with the big shots, spotted Betty White, got this shot of Larry King making the best face I’ve seen, indicted an “ET” cameramen for knocking over drinks, and wrote, by far, my favorite headline of the weekend.

For those of us who didn’t make it down, we just experienced it through CSPAN and, of course, Twitter. So today we’ve collected some of our favorite insider twitpics from “Nerd Prom.”

“The View” co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Barabara Walters celebrate Behar’s new HLN show at the Plaza Hotel last night.

The famed Oak Room at New York’s Plaza Hotel was the setting for a party last night to celebrate the launch of HLN’s “The Joy Behar Show“, premiering Tuesday at 9pmET. The party, thrown by Behar’s “The View” co-host Barbara Walters, was packed with boldface names from news and entertainment and from all the networks.

In introducing Behar, Walters joked about her new show, “We originally thought it was going to go to Starr Jones. Then we were sure it was going to be Rosie [O'Donnell]. But finally, finally it is Joy.”

Behar thanked Walters and her “new boss” at HLN, CNN Worldwide EVP, Ken Jautz. “He found me. I was a poor little girl on a network show, trying to get a word in edgewise.”

Behar tells us she is a little nervous, but more excited about the new show. Her first guest, was Johnny Carson‘s last guest: Bette Midler.

Behar’s soon to be HLN colleagues were all there: Nancy Grace, Jane Velez-Mitchell and A.J. Hammer. CNN anchors Larry King, Anderson Cooper, T.J. Holmes, and Ali Velshi. CNN correspondents Alina Cho, Jason Carroll, Suzanne Malveaux (up from D.C. for U.N. week), and Jeanne Moos.

From NBC Hoda Kotb and Dawn Fratangelo; soon to be Fox Business host John Stossel, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Joan Rivers the Rev. Al Sharpton, Vera Wang, Lorraine Bracco and Alan Alda.

Behar’s “The View” co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg were on hand. From CNN and CBS News Erica Hill, and her Saturday “Early Show” co-anchor Chris Wragge and his WCBS co-anchor, and former MSNBC anchor, Kristine Johnson

CNN executives Jim Walton, Ken Jautz, Susan Grant and Jon Klein.

We’d just arrived when guest Suze Orman began telling us her concern that there’s something fishy about losing her once-commanding lead our GMA co-anchor off. “It’s physically impossible to gain that much,” said Orman of the lead now held by Ashleigh Banfield.

Ratigan Talks Money & Madoff on The View

DRatigan_12.17.jpg

CNBC’s Dylan Ratigan joined the ladies of “The View” today. He talked about the Fed’s decision to lower interest rates, the brewing “second housing crisis” (props to Sherri Shepherd on that one) and the Bernard Madoff scandal. Joy Behar asked, “Do you think he’s a psychopath?” “He’s a sociopath, a psychopath,” said Ratigan. “He worked inside of his own community and destroyed the wealth… it is incredible. We’ll get him. We’ll get him,” he added.
