Chris Cuomo Scores Big Interviews ‘Despite All The Money Being Offered By Others’

With the excitement over “Good Morning America’s” ratings and Nik Wallenda‘s wire-walk over Niagara Falls, recognition of some of ABC’s recent big gets seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Three of those gets, were all gotten by “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo and his team: Cuomo’s interview with Rielle Hunter airs Friday night; the pre-sentence interview with Rutger’s student Dharun Ravi in March; and the October sitdown with Stephanie Madoff Mack, former daughter-in-law of Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.

“We worked hard at securing three of the biggest bookings so far this year,” Cuomo tells TVNewser, “despite all the money being offered by others, which is of course forbidden at ABC News.”

Last July, ABC News stopped paying licensing fees in order to score big interviews. The revelation that the network paid  $200,000 to the family of Casey Anthony, was the beginning of the end of the practice at ABC.

“It’s rewarding to know that ABC’s reputation for tough but fair interviews and our unrivaled distribution on multiple platforms are still the most powerful incentives to sit down with us,” says Cuomo.

’60 Minutes’ Scores Ruth Madoff Exclusive

In her first interview since her husband was sentenced to life in prison , Bernie Madoff‘s wife Ruth Madoff is speaking to a TV news outlet. Madoff’s outlet of choice is CBS’ “60 Minutes,” which will run the piece on Sunday.

Morley Safer interviewed Madoff, who revealed that she and her husband attempted suicide after the accusations became public. Safer also spoke to Madoff’s son Andrew.

“I don’t know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening,” Ruth Madoff tells Safer. “We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said ‘…I just can’t go on anymore.’”

Last week, ABC’s “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo had the first interview with Bernard Madoff’s daughter-in-law Stephanie Madoff Mack, whose husband Mark, did commit suicide over the torment of his father’s crimes.

Madoff, Mariah Help Make 20/20 Friday’s #1 Show

ABC’s “20/20,” which featured Chris Cuomo‘s interview with the daughter-in-law of Bernard Madoff as well as Barbara Walters‘s interview with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon was the #1 show of the night in two of the younger demos: A18-49 and A25-54. Cuomo’s interview with Stephanie Madoff Mack was the first time many of the Madoff family secrets have been revealed. In Walters’s sit-down interview with Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon, the couple discussed details of their struggle to conceive and Carey’s high-risk pregnancy.

This was the show’s best viewership in more than 18 months, since February 2010, and its highest A18-49 rating since January 2010. Going head-to-head “20/20″ more than doubled “Dateline NBC” in the demo (2.1 vs. 1.0) and nearly doubled in Total Viewers (7.6M vs. 3.9M). “20/20″ helped make ABC #1 for the night in Adults 18-49.

For Chris Cuomo, Stephanie Madoff Mack’s Story is a Challenge To Tell

For “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo, the story of Bernie Madoff is a complex one, with a resonating message.

“Madoff became the face of the animosity toward what was perceived, what still is perceived, as a corrupt financial system,” Cuomo tells TVNewser. “After 2008 there became an engrained sense among many that there are two sets of rules, that there is a dirty game afoot when it comes to the wealthy and Wall Street.”

Cuomo was highly aware of Madoff’s reputation during a recent sit-down with his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Madoff Mack, in her first interview since the December suicide of her husband, Mark Madoff. By all accounts, Cuomo says, Mack was innocent of any wrongdoing, and she is now left picking up the pieces of a shattered life.

“This is a difficult form of journalism,” he says. “This is a love story wrapped up in a news story, and that’s tricky to tell, because there is a really deep bond between these two people, Stephanie and Mark. So telling that story, while remembering that this is also a window into a situation that affected thousands, is tricky. It involves a lot of sophisticated storytelling.” Read more
