Pastor Terry Jones and his plan to burn copies of the Koran led to stories about “Anti-Muslim sentiment” taking up 15% of the overall newshole. TV news was particularly interested in the matter, with the incident taking up 24% of the coverage on cable and 21% of the time on the network newscasts.

The Park51 Muslim community Center and mosque in lower Manhattan was the fourth most covered story of the week, taking up 5% of the newshole:

ABC News bound for ‘Extinction?’ Prediction ‘Belongs at the Bottom of the Birdcage’

ABCNLogo_9.10.gifMarketwatch.com’s Jon Friedman has a question about ABC News, what with the impending departure of David Westin, the cutting of 25% of the staff, and the fact that the news division remains ensconced in second place:

Now, I have the audacity to ask: Can anything save ABC News from extinction? Right now — and for the foreseeable future — the smart answer would be a curt “no.”

What say you, ABC News?

ABC News Not Flying Florida Pastor to New York

Instead of burning Korans in a field near his Gainesville, FL church, Pastor Terry Jones is planning to be in New York tomorrow. He believes he has a meeting with the Imam heading up the lower Manhattan mosque project.

On MSNBC this morning, NBC News correspondent Kerry Sanders reported from outside the Gainesville church that ABC News was preparing to fly Pastor Jones to New York.

“It appears based on what he just told us,” said Sanders, “that ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ has arranged to fly him to New York and he will be flying with a team of producers and camera crews to New York…”

TVNewser reached out to ABC News. Spokesperson Jeffrey Schneider tells us that an offer was made to the Pastor by an ABC News staffer in Gainesville, but network higher-ups decided against paying for Jones’ flight to New York.

It is not uncommon for news networks to pay for flights or hotels or even cash (via the licensing of photos or videos) for interview subjects with the hope of securing an exclusive in return. But in the case of Pastor Jones, ABC News decided against it.

Jones appeared on all three network newscasts this morning.

Fox News, which said earlier that it had no plans to cover the event, stayed with a “best of” edition of “Glenn Beck.” Now it looks like the other news organizations don’t have to worry about deciding what to do in terms of coverage this weekend.

Church’s Planned Koran Burning is Hot Topic on TV News

HLN_9.8.jpg“Nightline” led with the story last night, and today NBC’s Brian Williams got reaction from Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO Commander in Afghanistan about the Gainesville, Florida church which plans to burn Korans this Saturday — the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Nightline’s Terry Moran traveled to Gainesville yesterday to interview Pastor Terry Jones who is behind the “Burn a Koran Day.” And today, Williams talked with Gen. Petraeus who said, “such an act would jeopardize the safety of our soldiers and our civilians,” adding “We’re concerned that the images from the burning of a Koran would be used in the same way that extremists used images from Abu Ghraib, that they would in a sense be indelible. They would be in cyberspace forever.”

A rough search on TVEyes shows the story has become a leading topic on the cable news channels. It’s been mentioned 117 times in the last 24 hours (since 4pmET Tuesday) — the most mentions on HLN followed closely by MSNBC, with the least amount of coverage on Fox News.

The question now is, how will the TV news networks cover the planned burning and how much, if any, will they show? We’re asking…

After the jump, Moran’s story from Nightline…
