Comedy Central Orders Norm Macdonald Sports Show

Comedy Central has given the green light to a weekly sports comedy program hosted by comedian Norm Macdonald, titled, appropriately enough, “Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.”

The program will premiere on Comedy Central in March.

“I’m excited and look forward to doing this series,” said Macdonald in a statement. “On this show, we plan to put the central back in Comedy Central.”

The show is part “Daily Show,” part “Tosh.0 and part “Onion SportsDome,” with Macdonald discussing topical sports issues in front of a live audience.

Comedy Central made a big push into sports earlier this year with the Onion SportsDome. “Sports Show” could be used as a natural partner with SportsDome in Comedy’s primetime lineup.

So You Want to Be a Play-By-Play Man…

In Sunday’s Providence Journal, Bill Reynolds profiles longtime “Voice of the Celtics,”Mike Gorman.

The Dorchester, Massachusetts native and his partner Tommy Heinsohn are one of the longest-tenured broadcast duos in the sports world.

How did he get his start? By making things up on a golf course. He tells Reynolds about covering a tournament in the 1980s where the only phone was in the clubhouse.

“We’d say things like here we are on the 14th fairway,” he said. “We just made it up. But no graduate school with the finest equipment could have given you that kind of experience.”

That’s ingenuity.
