A Carefully Planned Media Roll-Out as Secy. Clinton Takes Responsibility for Attack in Libya

Last night Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commented on the Embassy attacks in Libya that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American members of his staff. “I take responsibility,” Clinton said, noting that she did not want to make the issue a political one.

CNN was the first TV news outlet to report Clinton’s comments. Clinton was doing a series of interviews with U.S. TV networks, and CNN was early on the list. The comments had all the hallmarks of a carefully planned roll-out.

CNN reported Clinton’s comments at 7:30pmET, with Fox News and Fox Business reporting them at 7:43pm. CNBC reported the news at 7:56 citing CNN, while MSNBC reported the comments at 8:54, citing NBC News.

“CBS This Morning” led its newscast this morning with Clinton’s comments to CBS’ foreign correspondent Margaret Brennan. NBC’s “Today” made the comments the top story as well, with ABC’s “Good Morning America” reporting the comments shortly thereafter at 7:06 AM.
