With HDNet Rebranding, What Happens to ‘Dan Rather Reports’?

HDNet, the cable channel founded by Mark Cuban, is rebranding as AXS TV, with Ryan Seacrest, CAA, and AEG coming on board as partners. The channel’s focus will be shifted toward live events and shows, particularly concerts and sports.

The transformation begs the question, what happens to HDNet’s signature news program, “Dan Rather Reports”? The answer: very little.

According to Cuban, Rather’s program will remain on the channel, though it will have more live elements than it currently does. He told Brian Stelter at the New York Times:

Reflecting the emphasis on live TV, Mr. Cuban noted that Mr. Rather already has had some live programs on HDNet, including coverage of the New Hampshire Republican primary last week. Mr. Rather does not have a formal contract at HDNet; “as long as he wants to be there, he’s there,” Mr. Cuban said Wednesday, repeating what he has said in the past.
