David Baer Hired as WHP News Director

David Baer has been named news director for Harrisburg, PA, CBS affiliate WHP.

Arthur Hasson, WHP vice president and general manager told TVSpy, “We are very excited about the arrival of our new news director David Baer. He has an amazing background with extensive news room experience highlighted by excellence at every step. His recent experience in Albany NY is particularly appropriate given it is also a hyphenated market centered in a state capitol.”

Baer last worked as news director at WXXA in Albany, NY. The Newport owned station was bought by Shield Media last year and entered into a shared services agreement with Young Broadcasting, the owners of Albany ABC affiliate WTEN. Under the terms of the agreement, WTEN took over production of the newscasts for both stations.

Baer has also worked at WGGB in Springfield, MA, and has been a news director in Indianapolis, Raleigh, Providence, Portland, ME, and Buffalo.

Craig Hume Joins KSNV as News Director

Craig Hume is joining KSNV, the NBC affiliate in Las Vegas, as news director. Hume joins the station from Harrisburg, Pa., where he has been the news director at WHP-WLYH since 2009.

“The power of News 3 is built on a reputation for excellence in journalism and deep roots in the community. I look forward to helping expand News 3′s high-quality local news coverage in new time periods,” Hume said in a statement.

Hume replaces Bob Stoldal, who will be “spending more time on his corporate responsibilities” as executive vice president of news, according to Rick Gevers & Associates. Intermoutain West Communications, KSNV’s parent company, is expanding local news programming in both Las Vegas and at KRNV in Reno, and Stoldal will oversee the expansion.

Heather Warner to Come Back to WPMT

WPMT has announced the return of Heather Warner. Warner left the York, PA, FOX affiliate in July to spend more time with her family and pursue a master’s degree in communications.

“Life is always full of unexpected twists, isn’t it?” said Warner in a statement on the WPMT website, “You never know when another fantastic opportunity will strike.”

Viewers will have to wait a few months before seeing Warner again on-air, though.  She will join co-anchor Courtney Laydon, meteorologist Jeff Jumper and traffic reporter Chris Garrett for the morning news beginning May 1. Read more

WPMT Morning News Expands to 4:00 a.m.

WPMT‘s morning news will begin an hour earlier. The Harrisburg, PA, FOX affiliate has announced they are expanding their morning news to five hours by starting at 4:00 a.m beginning Wednesday. The show will now run from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. weekdays.

News director David Silverstein told TVNewscheck, “Five hours may sound like a long time. But you must keep in mind that everybody has a different schedule in the morning. When you have a five hour spread of local news, as we now do, you’re the only station able to serve Pennsylvanians no matter what time their day starts.”

The morning newscast will feature the same anchor line up, with anchor Courtney Laydon, meteorologist Jeff Jumper and traffic reporter Chris Garrett.

WGAL Launching Newscast on Subchannel

Starting Monday, February 4, Lancaster, PA, NBC affiliate WGAL will begin airing a 10 p.m. newscast on its subchannel 8.2.

The newscast will feature anchors Ron Martin, Janelle Stelson and meteorologist Doug Allen weekdays.  The weekends will be anchored by Jim Sinkovitz and meteorologist Matthew Moore.

Lancaster Online spoke with John Baldwin from WGAL who said the 10 p.m. news will not be a duplicate of the main channel’s 11 p.m.

Baldwin didn’t say this, but the 10 p.m. newscast will compete directly with WPMT-TV Fox 43′s News at 10, which appears to be a return shot in response to other networks expanding their news coverage.

The 10 p.m. show can also be seen on Comcast channel 248, Blue Ridge cable channel 136, Kuhn Communications channel 68 and channel 460 on Verizon FiOS.
