WXYZ Adds Sports Anchor David Solano

WXYZ announced today that David Solano will be joining the Detroit ABC-affiliate in July as a weekend sports anchor and reporter.

Solano comes to Detroit from KIAH, the CW-affiliate in Houston.  Before KIAH, Solano spent three years working as the weekend sports anchor at WZZM in Grand Rapids.

“Fans in Detroit really know their sports,” Solano said. “I love storytelling, so being able to share the stories of pro, college and high school athletes with so many knowledgeable fans is really exciting. I have so much respect for WXYZ, and I’m honored to be a part of a station with so much tradition.” Read more

Former KABC Reporter Bob Banfield Dies at 82

Bob Banfield, who retired from KABC in 2010 after 43 years at the Los Angeles ABC O&O, died this morning after a long struggle with cancer. He was 82.

The station ran a tribute to Banfield on its 11 a.m. newscast this morning, featuring an interview he did with reporter Marc Brown (video above). Read more

KNBC Keeps Ann Curry News a Secret During Morning Show

Los Angeles NBC O&O KNBC kept the news of Ann Curry‘s departure from the “Today” show a secret during its morning newscast Thursday.

Unlike its NBC sister stations on the West Coast, KNTV and KNSD, who both reported on Curry’s departure, KNBC decided not to mention the news before the start of “Today.”

Curry’s teary announcement came around 8:50 a.m. ET so NBC stations on the West Coast had to decide whether or not they were going to break the news on their shows. Read more

Mike Dardis Named 11 p.m. Co-Anchor at WLWT

Sheree Paolello is getting a new co-anchor on WLWT‘s 11 p.m. newscast. Mike Dardis will join her on the anchor desk beginning tonight.

Stacy Owen, the news director at the Cincinnati NBC-affiliate, announced the news in an email to staffers that was obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“As part of our efforts to defend and extend our multi-platform momentum, Mike Dardis will join Sheree on News 5 at 11,” Owen wrote. “In addition to adding new feel to the show, this will enable both Mike and Sheree to work on special reports. The lineup of the 5, 530 and 6 stays the same. Here’s to our own strong summer season!”

Dardis has been anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast and reporting for the 11 p.m. since he joined WLWT from KOMO in April. Paolello was previously the solo anchor of the 11 p.m. newscast.

Dave Price Named Morning Anchor at WNYW; Greg Kelly Shifts to Evenings

Beginning next Monday, Rosanna Scotto will have a new co-anchor on “Good Day New York”: Dave Price (left), a former WNYW weathercaster, is returning to the Fox O&O.

Price’s hire sets a cascade of changes to WNYW’s newscasts into motion. Greg Kelly (right), Scotto’s current co-anchor, will move to evenings, anchoring the 6 p.m. newscast solo and 10 p.m. newscast with Dari Alexander. Kelly replaces Ernie Anastos at 10 p.m. and Harry Martin at 6 p.m.

Anastos’ time at the anchor desk will be reduced, although the station will add more “Positively Ernie” specials to its lineup beginning later this year. He will remain in his current role on the 5 p.m. newscast. Martin will continue as an anchor on WNYW sister station WWOR, and will focus on political reporting ahead of the election, a WNYW spokesperson tells TVSpy. Read more

Ann Curry Says an Emotional Goodbye to ‘Today’

After  a week of public speculation about her future on “Today,” co-host Ann Curry tearfully bid farewell to the NBC program at the close of this morning’s broadcast.

Curry has been on “Today” for 15 years, spending 14 years as newsreader and the last year as co-host.

“After all of these years, I don’t even know if I can sleep in anymore. I don’t even know if I can, but I know that whatever time I wake up, I know I’ll be missing you,” Curry said. “For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line, but I sure did try.”

NBC’s Natalie Morales Handles ‘Today’ Affiliate Teases

With Ann Curry‘s exiting “Today,” viewers nationwide have seen some changes on local NBC stations.

“Today” show news reader Natalie Morales has handled the teases for the NBC affiliates for the past two weeks, according to a search of TVEyes. It was first reported last Thursday that NBC executives were preparing a plan to replace Curry before the Olympics, which begin next month.

Several NBC-affiliates reported on their early newscasts that Curry would be saying goodbye to “Today” this morning. Read more

Nexstar Cuts WEHT-WTVW News Director

Bob Walters is out as news director of WEHT-WTVW in Evansville.

Walters, who had been with WTVW since 2000, was promoted to news director of both stations last year after Nexstar Broadcasting acquired WEHT and merged its operations with WTVW.  His departure was first reported this week by Jake’s DTV Blog.

WEHT-WTVW production manager John Payne was also let go by Nexstar, and he has since been replaced by Jeremy Moore from WTWO, the company’s NBC-affiliate in Terre Haute. Read more

WPTA Reports Morning Anchor’s Drunk Driving Arrest, Drops Her Bio From Website

As Fort Wayne ABC-affiliate WPTA reported on the drunk driving arrest of morning anchor Mary Collins on Wednesday, the station quietly pulled her bio from its website.

Collins, who has been a fixture on Fort Wayne TV since 1996, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Walgreens.  A Walgreens employee reportedly called police after Collins purchased a bottle of wine while smelling strongly of alcohol.

When the police arrived, Collins was driving her Lexus SUV up to the Walgreens pharmacy drive-through window.  Police eventually arrested her and found an open bottle of wine in her car. Read more
