Cleveland’s WKYC Hires Meteorologist Marcus Walter

Marcus Walter is joining WKYC, the NBC-affiliate in Cleveland, as a meteorologist.

Walter joins WKYC from ABC News, where he is currently the weather producer for “Good Morning America” meteorologist Sam Champion. The station reported the hire on the “WKYC Director’s Cut” blog.

He replaces A.J. Colby, who was let go from WKYC in April of last year but continued to work at the station on a freelance basis until October.  Walter’s first day will be February 13.

Cleveland Weathercaster A.J. Colby Joins WJW

Longtime Cleveland weathercaster A.J. Colby has joined Fox-affiliate WJW on a part-time basis.

The move is a return to WJW for Colby, who worked at the station for three years before joining WKYC, the NBC-affiliate, in 2005. In April, WKYC announced Colby would be let go, but he has remained at the station on a freelance basis since then.

Colby will handle the weekend and morning weathercasting on WJW. “Fox 8 viewers know A.J. and trust him, and it is great to have him back with us to make our outstanding weather team that much stronger,” WJW general manager Greg Easterly told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

“It means the world to me,” Colby said of the move. “It’s part time to start with, but I hope it will be expanded in the future. There was just a lot more potential for growth at Channel 8.”

WKYC Dropping Weathercaster A.J. Colby

In a move that news director Rita Andolsen called one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do in this business, Cleveland NBC-affiliate WKYC has decided to let go of weekend and noon weathercaster A.J. Colby.

Colby, who started with WKYC in 2005 and has been a full-time staffer since 2007, told The Plain Dealer that he was informed of the station’s decision following the noon newscast last Wednesday. His final day on the air is set for May 29th.

“Rita told me it had nothing to do with my performance,” Colby told The Plain Dealer. “They’ve been very nice to me, and I was grateful they gave me that amount of time to look for something else. She said they were just going in a different direction. I don’t know what the different direction is, but I apparently didn’t fit into it.”

Colby grew up in the Cleveland area and has been a presence on TV there for the past decade, working at WJW and WEWS before joining WKYC. Read more
