WBZ Meteorologist Explains the ‘Coffee Cup Incident’

Perhaps you saw the photo of meteorologist Barry Burbank–and his coffee cup–that flitted around the internet? Burbank, who anchors at CBS owned WBZ in Boston, does not drink coffee. But apparently he’s still expected to start the weekend morning show standing alongside anchor Kerry Connolly with mug in hand anyway, because nothing says you’re friendly, warm and worth watching like holding an empty prop coffee cup. So as Burbank explained, he held his cup upside down.

Even Jimmy Fallon poked fun at it in his monologue on Monday’s “Tonight Show.”
“What is this thing? Do I write with it?” Fallon said about the upside down mug.
It turns out Barry was just poking fun at the fact that no one ever puts anything in his cup.
“In the past, on some mornings I say, ‘you know my cup is always empty nobody ever puts anything my cup,’” Barry said Monday night, before the “Tonight Show” aired.
“So I said lets go on the air and I’ll have my cup turned upside down, and maybe see if people notice that the cup is upside down. They always say that my cup is always empty, not just half full or half empty, it’s always empty, so there you go, cheers.”

Eric Fisher Named Chief Meteorologist at WBZ

Eric Fisher is joining WBZ in Boston as chief meteorologist. He will officially join the CBS O&O August 19.

Fisher returns to Boston from Atlanta, where he has been a meteorologist at The Weather Channel since 2010. He has also worked as a meteorologist for WFXT in Boston and WGGB in Springfield, Mass.

“Eric is a native New Englander who’s very familiar with our area’s dynamic weather, and he has a track record for spot-on forecasting,” WBZ news director John Verrilli said in a statement. “He also has a great deal of experience reporting live, in extreme weather, and his skills will serve the community well when he reports on breaking weather from the WBZ Mobile AccuWeather Lab.”

Fisher will handle the weather forecasts on the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on WBZ and the 10 p.m. newscast on sister station WSBK. Todd Gutner, who is currently the evening meteorologist, will shift to mornings, replacing Melissa Mack, who left WBZ earlier this year. Barry Burbank, who has been filling in on the morning newscast since Mack’s departure, will be the weekend morning meteorologist and Joe Joyce will be the weekend evening meteorologist.
