Jon Skorburg Named VP-GM of WOI

woi logoNexstar has appointed a new general manager of WOI, its recently-acquired ABC affiliate in Des Moines. Effective immediately, Jon Skorburg has been named vice president and general manager of the station and its associated digital operations.

It is a move within Nexstar for Skorburg, who has been vice president and general manager of Nexstar’s WQRF and Mission Broadcasting’s WTVO in Rockford, Ill., since 2011. Before that, he was the president and CEO of WNWO, the NBC affiliate in Toledo.

“With his local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to the local Midwest communities that he serves, we are confident in Jon’s ability to provide effective leadership and to build upon the success of WOI-TV,” Nexstar Broadcasting COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Skorburg replaces Russ Hamilton, who has been general manager of WOI since 2011.

Nexstar Names Derek Jeffery GM of KGET

nexstar_logoDerek Jeffery has been named vice president and general manager at KGET, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Bakersfield, Calif. In his new role, Jeffery will also have oversight of Telemundo station KKEY and the stations’ associated digital properties.

Jeffery replaces Tom Randour, who is retiring after 16 years as general manager and 37 years at KGET.

“Localism is our top priority at Nexstar and Derek brings a unique home town understanding of the local Bakersfield community to his new role at KGET-TV. His efforts and initiatives have fostered long-term relationships with local advertisers and community businesses and he has been a key contributor to the station’s success in the market,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Jeffrey has worked at KGET for 10 years, most recently as general sales manager, a role he has held since 2009.

Nexstar Promotes Julie Pruett, Names Wayne Reed Wichita Falls General Manager

KFDX-KJTL-KJBO general manager Julie Pruett has been promoted to senior vice president and regional manager of west region markets at Nexstar Broadcasting. In her new role, she will be overseeing Nexstar’s stations in Louisiana, Missouri and Texas.

In a statement announcing the promotion, Nexstar COO Brian Jones said Pruett’s new position was created to “oversee our expanded scale and maintain our industry-wide reputation of delivering exceptional community service.”

“Julie brings to her new position a deep understanding of critical functions including station management, local programming production, sales and strategic planning, and positioning across multiple media platforms,” Jones said.

Pruett will be replaced by Wayne Reed, who will step into the general manager role at Nexstar’s stations serving Wichita Falls, Texas and Lawton, Okla. Reed has worked at the stations since 1994, most recently as director of sales.

“Wayne brings a proven long-term record of achieving outstanding financial results by implementing innovative sales strategies and leading teams that delivered compelling and effective marketing solutions for local and national advertisers,” Jones said.

Albert Gutierrez Named VP-GM of KTAB-KRBC

Nexstar Broadcasting has named Albert Gutierrez vice president and general manager of KTAB-KRBC, the CBS and NBC affiliates in Abilene-Sweetwater, Texas.

Gutierrez comes from KMID, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate in Midland, Texas, where he has been VP-GM since 2010. Earlier in his career, he worked in a local sales position at KRBC. He has worked at several other Texas stations throughout his career, including KLST-KSAN in San Angelo, KTEN in Sherman and KZAV in Brownsville.

“He has an impressive background in all aspects of our business, and a proven track-record of leading teams that delivered compelling and effective marketing solutions for local and national advertisers,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement. “We are confident that his depth of expertise, ability to develop strong relationships with advertising clients, and dedication to the communities he serves will be important attributes in his new position in Abilene/Sweetwater.”

Nexstar Taps Eric Thomas as General Manager of KLBK

Nexstar Broadcasting has named Eric Thomas vice president and general manager of Lubbock, TX, CBS affiliate KLBK.

“I began my broadcasting career in Lubbock and am deeply committed to the great state of Texas where I grew up and where my wife, two children and extended family and many close business contacts and personal friends currently reside,” said Thomas. “I look forward to working with the exceptional team of broadcasters, the station’s advertisers and the local community to drive continued viewership growth while delivering superior marketing solutions to local and national advertisers.”

Thomas, who will also oversee the company’s joint operating agreement with Mission Broadcasting’s KAMC and serve as head of e-media operations for both station’s digital properties, previously worked as vice president and general manager of KTAB in Abilene/Sweetwater, TX. Read more

Richard Doutre’Jones Named GM at Salt Lake City’s KTVX-KUCW

Nexstar Broadcasting has named Richard Doutre’Jones vice president and general manager of KTVX and KUCW, the ABC and CW affiliates in Salt Lake City.

Doutre’Jones spent 18 years at KBHK (now KBCW) in San Francisco, working as a local and national sales manager, general sales manager and station manager. In 2001, he moved to San Diego, where he became VP-GM of XETV-XDTV.  Most recently, he has served as the vice president of Jones Broadcast group while also operating RDJ Global, providing consulting and M&A advisory services to broadcast and other companies.

“With his depth of local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to the local Salt Lake community, we are confident that Richard is the ideal person to lead the television and e-media operations of KTVX and KUCW,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Doutre’Jones replaces Matt Jaquint at the stations. KTVX-KUCW underwent a round of layoffs before Christmas.

Leo Henning Appointed VP-GM of KOZL-KOLR

Nexstar Broadcasting has announced Leo Henning will be vice president and general manager of KOZL, an independent station in Springfield, MO, effective immediately. Henning will also oversee KOLR, Mission Broadcasting’s CBS-affiliate, which Nexstar operates under a joint operating agreement.

Henning comes from Saukview Media, where he is the president and CEO. Prior to that, he spent five years at Barrington Broadcasting, where he was group head of several stations, including WNWO in Toledo, KRCG in Columbia, WHOI in Peoria, KHQA in Hannibal, WLUC in Marquette and KTVO in Kirksland. Before joining Barrington, Henning spent 33 years at Quincy Newspapers’ Broadcast Group.

“With his local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to the local communities he has served for many years in the Ozarks and Midwest, we are confident that Leo is the ideal person to lead KOZL’s television and e-media operations,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Nexstar Pools Resources of Arkansas Stations to Launch Statewide Newscast

Using staffers and technical resources from four of its local stations in Arkansas, Nexstar Broadcasting is launching a statewide daily newscast called “Arkansas Today.”

Beginning today, the half-hour show will air on all four stations — KARK in Little Rock, KNWA in Fayetteville, KTVE in El Dorado and KTAL in Texarkana — on weekdays at noon. Although each station will have live broadcast capabilities for “Arkansas Today,” the newscast’s home base will be at KARK.

The show will be anchored by KARK anchor Mallory Hardin and meteorologist Greg Dee. Reporters from all four stations will contribute on a daily basis. Read more

Brandy Sanchez Named VP-GM of KAMR

Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced today that Brandy Sanchez has been named vice president and general manager of KAMR, the company’s NBC-affiliate in Amarillo, TX.

Sanchez will also oversee KCIT and KCPN, the market’s Mission Broadcasting stations, under Nexstar’s joint operating agreement with Mission.

Sanchez has spent the past 18 years working in Amarillo TV. She joined KCIT in 1994 as a traffic assistant, eventually climbing the ranks to become director of sales for KAMR, KCIT, and KCPN.

Mark McKay Takes Over as VP-GM of KTAL

Mark McKay has been appointed vice president and general manager at KTAL, the NBC-affiliate in Shreveport, LA, Nexstar Broadcasting announced today.

McKay’s appointment is a move within Nexstar — he joins KTAL from KAMR-KCIT-KCPN in Amarillo, TX, where he has been vice president and general manager since 2004. The new position is a return to KTAL for McKay, who began his broadcasting career as an anchor at the station in 1980.

Nexstar COO Brian Jones called McKay “the ideal person” to lead KTAL.

“He has an impressive background in all aspects of our business, and a proven track-record of leading teams that delivered compelling and effective marketing solutions for local and national advertisers,” Jones said in a statement.
