WHP News Director David Baer Arrested in Prostitution Sting, Former Reporter Says

WHP news director David Baer was arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution, former WHP reporter Kirk Wilson confirms to the Patriot News.

Baer, 63, was one of three arrested in a prostitution sting in Swatara Township, Penn., Thursday night. Two women were also arrested on prostitution charges in an “ongoing investigation” led by Swatara Township police and agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Human Trafficking Taskforce, according to the Patriot News.

Wilson, who resigned from the Harrisburg CBS affiliate in May after a contentious meeting with station management, is the first to publicly identify the man involved in the prostitution sting as the station’s news director.

WHP has reported briefly on the arrests but made no mention of Baer’s employment with the station. He has held the news director position since April; as of Sunday afternoon, he remains listed on WHP’s website as the station’s news director.

WHP general manager Arthur Hasson has not responded to TVSpy’s request for comment.

Kirk Wilson: I Resigned From WHP After Being Told I Was ‘Painful to Watch’

Kirk Wilson is speaking out about his departure from WHP, the CBS affiliate in Harrisburg, Pa. In a Facebook post Tuesday, Wilson said he resigned after he was told he “didn’t meet the reporting standards” of Sinclair Broadcast Group at a meeting with news director David Baer and general manager Arthur Hasson.

According to the Patriot-News, Wilson wrote:

I understand the news director at WHP issued an email to the staff saying I resigned. True, I signed a letter, but he’s being disingenuous.

I didn’t intend to get in this detail, but he forced the issue. I was called into a meeting with him, the general manager and the HR director. The news director told me I didn’t meet the reporting standards of SBG TV. I was “painful to watch,” neither me nor my stories were conversational. I’ll stop there. It got worse.

I was told I could participate in his aggressive re-training program. But he doubted I could improve to his satisfaction. What choice did I have? Continue to be humiliated or resign.

David, don’t make it appear like it was something I wanted to do.

Wilson spent 26 years as mayor of Carlisle, Pa. before he joined WHP in 2011. WHP was acquired by Sinclair Broadcasting last year.

Baer did not respond to TVSpy’s request for comment.

>Update: Baer told TVSpy the station does not comment on personnel issues.

David Baer Hired as WHP News Director

David Baer has been named news director for Harrisburg, PA, CBS affiliate WHP.

Arthur Hasson, WHP vice president and general manager told TVSpy, “We are very excited about the arrival of our new news director David Baer. He has an amazing background with extensive news room experience highlighted by excellence at every step. His recent experience in Albany NY is particularly appropriate given it is also a hyphenated market centered in a state capitol.”

Baer last worked as news director at WXXA in Albany, NY. The Newport owned station was bought by Shield Media last year and entered into a shared services agreement with Young Broadcasting, the owners of Albany ABC affiliate WTEN. Under the terms of the agreement, WTEN took over production of the newscasts for both stations.

Baer has also worked at WGGB in Springfield, MA, and has been a news director in Indianapolis, Raleigh, Providence, Portland, ME, and Buffalo.
