Vicente Arenas Joins CBS News From KHOU

vicente arenasVicente Arenas is joining CBS News as a Miami-based correspondent next month.

Arenas joins the network from KHOU, the CBS affiliate in Houston, where he has been a weekend anchor and reporter since 2003. Before that, Arenas worked at WOAI in San Antonio and KTRK in Houston.

Arenas will officially begin at CBS on March 17.

Carter Evans Named CBS News Correspondent

Carter Evans has been named a Los Angeles-based correspondent at CBS News, TVNewser reports.

Evans has been working as a freelance correspondent for the network and for KCBS, the CBS O&O in Los Angeles, in recent months. Earlier this month, he was caught in the crossfire of the Christopher Dorner shootout in Big Bear.

In a memo to staffers announcing the news, CBS News president David Rhodes cited Evans’ reporting on the Dorner story, noting “he always seems to be working when no one else is around.”

Evans is married to former KTTV entertainment reporter Courtney Friel.

CBS News’ Russ Mitchell Joining WKYC in Cleveland

CBS News anchor Russ Mitchell is joining WKYC, the NBC affiliate in Cleveland, as managing editor of evening news and lead anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, the Gannett-owned station announced today.

Mitchell said in a statement that he has “thoroughly enjoyed” his years at CBS, but was looking forward to “a unique opportunity to help create the next generation of local news in a great place and have a key role in in trying to make a difference in a wonderful community.”

Mitchell, who joined CBS in 1992, is the weekend anchor of “CBS Evening News” and “The Early Show.” His first day at WKYC will be January 16.

He replaces Romona Robinson, who left the station earlier this month after negotiations to extend her WKYC contract failed. General manager Brooke Spectorsky tells TVSpy Mitchell’s 6 and 11 p.m. co-anchor will be announced soon. Read more

Changes Atop CBS News: Sean McManus Leaves Post as David Rhodes Becomes President

There’s a new management team at CBS News.

Sean McManus, the president of CBS News and Sports, will become chairman of CBS Sports. Jeff Fager, the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” has been named chairman of CBS News and David Rhodes (left), most recently the head of Bloomberg TV, has been appointed president of CBS News.

“We are extremely pleased that David Rhodes will be joining Jeff at the helm of CBS News,” said CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves. “David is a tremendously talented and dynamic new voice in our organization, and he has already made a name for himself as a superb journalist and news executive with great energy, credibility and dedication.”

“The world needs great broadcast journalism right now—and we’re going to work tirelessly to produce that at CBS News,” said Rhodes. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know Jeff Fager, and hear his extraordinary passion for the institution.
