WOIO to Christen ‘LeBron James Sports Center’ If NBA Star Returns to Cleveland

LebronStudio

As LeBron James prepares for the sequel of “The Decision,” Cleveland’s CBS affiliate WOIO is going the extra mile to woo the hometown hero back to the Cavaliers.

The station is offering to name its sports studio “The LeBron James Sports Center,” if the NBA star returns to Cleveland, where he played from 2003-2010.

“There is no better player in the league than LeBron James,” says WOIO VP and GM Dominic Mancuso. “We’re ready to welcome him back with open arms and witness forgiveness!”

“We haven’t seen this much excitement about Cleveland sports since, well, the last “Decision,” adds News Director Dan Salamone, referring to the 2010 ESPN special during which James announced he was leaving Cleveland for the Miami Heat.

Mancuso adds, “19 Action News is committed to covering the King and giving Cleveland Cavaliers fans front row seats to all the action in our newscasts LIVE… hopefully from the LeBron James Sports Center.”

ESPN reports James has finished meeting with teams, and will now talk with his family and make his choice. James is reportedly planning to attend the World Cup final in Brazil this weekend, so a decision may come before then.

Dominic Mancuso Named GM at WOIO-WUAB

dominic mancusoDominic Mancuso has been named vice president and general manager at WOIO-WUAB, Raycom Media’s CBS and MyNetworkTV affiliates in Cleveland. He begins in his new role May 30.

“I’ve been doing as much research and learning as I can long-distance, but I really start learning the day I walk in the door,” Mancuso told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “That’s when I’ll really dig in and get to know the people and the operation there. But Cleveland is Raycom’s largest market, so it’s a complete thrill and honor to be chosen to lead WOIO and WUAB.”

Mancuso comes to Cleveland from Nashville, where he is the general manager at three stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting: Fox affiliate WZTV, MyNetworkTV affiliate WUXP and CW affiliate WNAB. At WOIO-WUAB, he replaces Bill Applegate, who is retiring after 45 years in the television industry.

Bryan McGruder Joins WZTV as News Director

“We are excited to have someone of Brian’s stature and experience leading our news department at FOX17 and look forward to the impact he will have on the market. His experience running highly successful newsrooms will be a huge asset to our operations,” WZTV general manager Dominic Mancuso said in announcing the news.

McGruder was vice president of news at WDAF in Kansas City for the past decade. He has also served as news director at WJCL-WTGS in Savannah, Ga. He replaces Roberta Petterson at WZTV. [h/t Bottom Line Communications]
