Local Stations Raise Money for Victims of Typhoon Haiyan

haiyan_cbsSeveral local stations around the US are asking viewers to pitch in to help the victims of the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines and Vietnam.

>In Philadelphia, CBS owned station KYW has partnered with its CW sister station WPSG, KYW newsradio, SportsRadio 94WIP, CBS Sports Radio 610, Talk Radio 1210 WPHT along with CBSPhilly.com and CBS Outdoor under the name “Operation Brotherly Love” in an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross.

All the stations along with CBSPhilly.com and several CBS Outdoor digital boards will be asking viewers and listeners to donate either online at www.CBSPhilly.com/relief or by calling 1-800-GIVE-122 (1-800-448-3122).

>In Sacramento, CA, NBC affiliate KCRA and MyNetworkTV affiliate KQCA teamed up with the Capital Region Chapter of the American Red Cross to raise more than $480,000 on Tuesday by doing live cut-ins throughout the day.

“I am proud to live in a community that is so generous and giving,” Elliott Troshinsky, president and general manager of KCRA-KQCA, said in a statement. “Northern Californians opened their wallets and showed their generosity by helping us raise nearly $500,000 for the Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts.  We truly want to thank all of our viewers for their generosity.” Read more

Local Stations on Both Coasts Announce Plans to Raise Money for Hurricane Sandy Relief

Philadelphia’s KYW and Sacramento’s KCRA have both separately announced plans to provide disaster relief for those affected by Hurricane Sandy through the American Red Cross.

In Philadelphia, CBS O&O KYW will air cut-ins at the top of every hour and in newscasts from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.  KYW’s Susan Barnett, Chris May, Pat Ciarrocchi, Ukee Washington and Erika von Tiehl, along with personalities from CW Philadelphia and the local CBS owned radio stations will staff a phone bank to take pledges for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Response Fund.

In Sacramento, NBC affiliate KCRA will air live cut-ins asking for donations during regular programming and newscasts from 6 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Viewers in Sacramento can donate by calling 1-800-513-3333 or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.  Philadelphia viewers can call 1-877-KYW3-ASK (1-877-599-3275) or also texti the word REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.

News Director Anzio Williams Leaving KCRA

Anzio Williams, who has been the news director at Sacramento’s KCRA since 2007, is set to leave the Hearst-owned station next Monday.

KCRA general manager Elliott Troshinsky announced Williams’s departure in an email to staff this week, saying that the veteran news director “has expressed a desire to pursue some other career interests and opportunities.”

Williams, who has been with Hearst for 14 years, joined KCRA after two years as news director at WDSU in New Orleans. Before that, he was the assistant ND at WESH in Orlando and at WCNC in Charlotte. Read more
