Anchor Yvonne Nava Leaving NBC Connecticut

WVIT morning anchor Yvonne Nava is leaving the Connecticut NBC O&O for a job in Texas.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Nava is the mother of a young boy and she’s making the move to be closer to her family. Nava, who has been with WVIT since December 2007, is set to depart the station at the end of the month.

“For the past five years, Yvonne has jumped into the community,” WVIT general manager David Doebler told the Hartford Courant. “She has done a lot of good stuff on the air and in the community and the opportunity to go back with her child to be close to her family is understandable.” Read more

Morning Anchor Melissa Gale Leaving KVUE

Melissa Gale, the longtime morning anchor at KVUE in Austin, says she will resign next month.

“I announced today at the station that after many great years at KVUE, reporting to the wonderful people of Austin on things that I hope have been very important to them, I’ve decided to take some much needed time off, and explore some other opportunities,” Gale wrote.

Gale, who also anchors the noon newscast, has been morning anchor at the ABC-affiliate for more than 10 years. Her last day will be sometime in mid-June, news director Frank Volpicella tells CultureMap Austin.

Andrew Horansky Joining KHOU From KVUE

KVUE‘s Andrew Horansky will move to Houston for a reporting job at KHOU later this month.

Horansky, who joined Austin’s KVUE in 2010, wanted to move to Houston to be near his fiancee, according to Austin media reporter Bill Church. Horansky said KVUE news director Frank Volpicella helped him find the open position at KHOU. Both stations are owned by Belo.

“The business is so competitive and just because I worked for Belo and had a solid resume didn’t guarantee me anything,” Horansky told Church. “I interviewed with KHOU’s news director and won the job, so it all worked out.” Read more

KVUE Names Bryan Mays Morning Co-Anchor

Austin’s KVUE has announced a replacement for Olga Campos, who left the station in July after 16 years: weekend sports anchor Bryan Mays.

“When Bryan filled in on the ‘Daybreak’ anchor desk, he created a spark that was felt not only on the air, but behind the scenes as well, working closely with the producers to improve the quality of the editorial aspect of the newscast,” KVUE news director Frank Volpicella said in a statement.

Mays, who has been at KVUE since 2004, will join Melissa Gale as co-anchor of the morning and mid-day newscasts on the ABC-affiliate. Sports reporter Matt Mitchell will take over Mays’ spot as weekend sports anchor; the station is currently searching for a replacement for Mitchell.
