Weekend Anchor Chris Saldana Leaving KLAS

Chris Saldana, the weekend anchor at KLAS, has announced his exit from the Las Vegas CBS affiliate.

Saldana, who joined KLAS in 2004, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that his decision to leave was because the station denied him vacation time to be with his ailing father over the holidays. Saldana was also passed over for a promotion when weekday anchor Gary Waddell retired earlier this year, he said.

“It was my decision,” Saldana said.  “I love what I do but was no longer happy where I was doing it at.”

KLAS news director Ron Comings told the Review-Journal that he is “sorry to see him leave and wish him great success in whatever he chooses to do.”

Anchor Paul Joncich Joining KLAS From WOIO

Anchor Paul Joncich is joining KLAS, the CBS-affiliate in Las Vegas, next month.

Joncich comes from WOIO in Cleveland, where he has been an anchor for the past six years. At KLAS, he replaces Gary Waddell, who is retiring. Joncich will anchor the noon, 4 and 4:30 p.m. newscasts, as well as reporting for the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.

“I am honored and humbled, to not replace Gary, because I know no one can, but to step in and try to pick up where he left off in continuing the 8 News NOW tradition,” Joncich said in a statement. “I’m going to make it my number one priority to earn your trust.”

Gary Waddell to Retire After 32 Years at KLAS

Gary Waddell is retiring from the KLAS anchor desk after 32 years with the Las Vegas CBS-affiliate.

Waddell will continue to anchor the station’s noon, 4 and 4:30 p.m. newscasts until his retirement on August 3. After that, he will occasionally appear on KLAS for coverage and perspective during major events, the station said in a statement.

“He is an excellent journalist who has unselfishly mentored many reporters, photojournalists and producers throughout the years,” general manager Emily Neilson said of Waddell. “No one is more committed to this community. No one is a better friend.” Video of Waddell’s announcement inside… Read more
