WJXT Saves Details of Meteorologist’s Hospitalization for Multi-Part Sweeps Story

When WJXT chief meteorologist George Winterling spent most of September in the hospital, the Jacksonville station shared virtually no information about his illness.

Now, in a multi-part sweeps series titled “George’s Miracle: What Really Happened,” WJXT is telling the story of Winterling’s apparent brush with death.  It turns out that the veteran meteorologist’s heart stopped and paramedics spent two minutes shocking him to get his pulse back.  Winterling then spent 11 days in a coma, with his body temperature reduced for much of the time to prevent further damage. WJXT’s George Winterling Home After Hospital Stay

Longtime WJXT chief meteorologist George Winterling has returned home following a hospital stay and a week in a rehabilitation center.

Winterling’s family sent a photo into WJXT of the veteran weathercaster relaxing at home in his favorite chair.

“He wants to thank all of you for your get well wishes and support,” anchor Rob Sweeting told viewers this week (video here).

Earlier this month, Winterling, 80, was hospitalized for an unspecified illness.  He has been with the station since 1962, although he stepped away from daily forecasting duties two years ago.

WJXT Meteorologist’s Condition Improving

WJXT chief meteorologist George Winterling remains in the hospital but his condition is improving, according to the station.  Winterling, 80, was hospitalized nearly two weeks with an unspecified illness.

“So many people have asked us about George in the past few days. I’m thrilled to tell you although he’s still in the hospital he’s stable and progressing,” WJXT vice president and general manager Bob Ellis announced on Friday. “He’s been watching our Channel 4 newscasts and, as you might expect, keeping tabs on the weather.”

Winterling has been WJXT’s chief meteorologist for over four decades.  Although he stepped away from daily forecasting duties two years ago, he remained active with the station up until the time of his hospitalization.

WJXT Chief Meteorologist Hospitalized

George Winterling, who has been chief meteorologist at WJXT for 47 years, is in the hospital after falling ill on Wednesday night.  According to the station, Winterling’s family is not yet ready to release details of his condition.

“George is so important to this station, our community, and many of you,” WJXT vice president and general manager Bob Ellis told viewers on Thursday.  “Members of our staff have visited his family this morning. His wife Virginia and their children and grandchildren want everyone in Jacksonville to know how much they appreciate your prayers and get well wishes. We will provide updates on how George is doing as soon as they are available.”

Although he remains WJXT’s chief meteorologist, Winterling stepped back from daily forecast duties two years ago.
