Atlanta Stations Balance State of the Union and Weather Coverage

Atlanta stations balanced two major stories — the President’s fifth State of the Union address and a winter storm blanketing the Deep South — during primetime Tuesday night.

CBS affiliate WGCL stayed in local coverage until immediately before the President was announced, opting out of Scott Pelley‘s national broadcast until 9:14 p.m. The station kept up a lower-third with school closings and other weather-related information during the speech. Scott Light and Stephany Fisher took over with storm coverage at the conclusion of the CBS special report around 10:45 p.m.

NBC affiliate WXIA took Brian Williams‘ national coverage on its main channel beginning at 9pmET. The station kept up a banner informing viewers that storm coverage continued on its subchannel. WXIA went back to local coverage at 10:50 p.m., with Brenda Wood and Jeff Hullinger anchoring.

Fox owned WAGA broadcast Shepard Smith‘s report beginning at 9pmET. Cynne Simpson and Russ Spencer took over with local coverage at the conclusion of Smith’s national broadcast at 10:44 p.m.

ABC affiliate WSB also took ABC’s national coverage with Diane Sawyer and and George Stephanopoulos beginning at 9pmET. Justin Farmer and Jovita Moore took over at 10:42 p.m., immediately after the conclusion of the GOP response.

WXIA Hires Bloomberg TV’s Melissa Long as Part of an Effort to Expand Evening News

Just a day after the announcement that Ted Hall would leave his post as 11 p.m. anchor for WXIA‘s morning show, the station said it has hired Bloomberg TV’s Melissa Long as part of an expansion effort across its evening newscasts.

Long, who worked in Atlanta as an anchor for CNN and HLN from 2005 to 2010, will co-anchor a re-branded 10 p.m. newscast with Jeff Hullinger.

“People want better, deeper content and at 11Alive, we are creating a culture to do just that,” said vice president of news Ellen Crooke.

WXIA’s 6 p.m and 11 p.m. anchor Brenda Wood will anchor the evening news solo going forward, the station said. Long and Hullinger will participate as contributors. The station is looking to add an additional anchor to their evening news team to co-anchor the 6 p.m. news with Wood.

Emmy Rundown: Southeast Region

The Southeast chapter of NATAS handed out Emmys over the weekend at a ceremony in Atlanta, honoring news and programming excellence for stations in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Asheville, NC.

Atlanta NBC-affiliate WXIA took home 11 Emmys and was honored multiple times in the News Programming Excellence category for Markets 1-25. Atlanta stations WSB, WGCL, and WAGA also received awards in the category.

Standing out in the smaller market field (75+) was Savannah’s WTOC, which was honored twice alongside Jackson’s WAPT and Columbia’s WIS.
