Pete Marquardt Named GM of WGBA-WACY

wgba logoPete Marquardt has been named general manager of WGBA and WACY, Journal Broadcast Group’s NBC and MyNetworkTV affiliates in Green Bay, TVNewsCheck reports. He begins April 28 and will report to Debbie Turner, Journal’s EVP of television.

Marquardt comes from WJFW in Wasau, Wis., where he has been general manager for the last three years. Before that, he worked as the station’s general sales manager.

He replaces Joe Poss, who was recently named vice president and general manager of WTMJ, Journal Broadcast Group’s NBC affiliate in Milwaukee.

WTMJ GM: ‘I Believe in Local Broadcasting’

wtmj logoAs Joe Poss starts his second week as the general manager of WTMJ in Milwaukee, he talks to the Journal Sentinel about his plans for the station:

About four years ago, Poss introduced live local sports programming to [his former station] WACY, which today carries more than 100 events a year, mostly high school basketball and football, but also Timber Rattlers minor league baseball. “I believe in local broadcasting,” Poss said. But, he added, WTMJ “is already doing a great deal of local product. I don’t see a direct opportunity for sports.”

[...] Asked for his opinion of WTMJ’s news gathering, presentation and segments like “Dirty Dining,” Poss said: “Ask me in a year after the news director is in place for a little while.” But he said weather coverage is “a core responsibility.”

“As a viewer, I love getting my weather from television,” and “I think there’s a responsibility” to provide it, he said.

It is a move within Journal Broadcast Group for Poss, who has been general manager of WGBA-WACY in Green Bay since 2011. Before that, he was the station’s general sales manager for six years. He has also worked in sales at KTNV in Las Vegas, WSVN in Miami and KMSP in Minneapolis.

“With his successful background in broadcast leadership and media sales, and his great rapport with clients and colleagues, Joe will be a welcome addition to the TODAY’S TMJ4 team,” Debbie Turner, executive vice president of television for Journal Broadcast Group, said in a statement. “We are excited for the enthusiasm and expertise he will bring to the Milwaukee television market.”

Poss replaces Steve Wexler, who was named executive vice president of radio for Journal Broadcast Group next month. More in the official release after the jump. Read more

Larry McCarren Joins WGBA as Sports Director

Larry McCarren is joining WGBA, the NBC affiliate in Green Bay, as sports director.

The announcement comes a year after McCarren’s departure from crosstown rival WFRV, where he worked for more than 24 years. McCarren played center for the Green Bay Packers for 12 seasons and was voted into the Pro Bowl in 1998. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1992.

“I’m really looking forward to calling NBC26 my new TV home. The station has already made significant strides in re-establishing its local sports presence and I will do my best to contribute to that collective effort,” McCarren said in a statement.

“As a former Green Bay Packer player, Larry brings a special kind of insight that is highly focused on local sports in Northeast Wisconsin,” WGBA general manager Joe Poss said.”That will enable NBC26 to provide the best exclusive coverage to Packers fans.”

McCarren begins at WGBA on April 1.
