WBZ Names Gary LaPlante News Director

wbz logo copyGary LaPlante has been named news director of Boston CBS owned station WBZ.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to lead an excellent team of journalists right here at home in Boston,” LaPlante said in a statement. “I could not be more proud than to join WBZ-TV with its long and legendary commitment to the community, and I look forward to working with the talented news staff on advancing the news product and developing the best content in the market.”

LaPlante comes to WBZ from WFXT in Boston where he was assistant news director. He has also worked as news director at WXXA in Albany, NY, assistant news director at WTEN in Albany, and executive producer at WFSB in Hartford, CT. He’s also worked at WHDH in Boston, WPRI and WLNE in Providence, RI.

He replaces John Verrilli who left the station in March. LaPlante starts Monday.

Boston Herald: Ratings to Blame For WBZ News Director’s Ouster

wbz logo copyThe Boston Herald is reporting ratings were to blame for the news director change at WBZ, the CBS owned station in Boston. John Verrilli had worked at the station’s news director since 2009 before departing yesterday:

When we asked one station insider why Verrilli was gone, the answer was simple: “Bad ratings.”

WBZ general manager Mark Lund met with staffers yesterday to break the news. Verrilli, who had been at ’BZ since 2009, will be replaced temporarily by assistant news director Sarah Burke until a permanent successor is named.

“We know ratings have been a challenge,” said one station snitch. “We have to get better.”

wbz logo copyWBZ news director John Verrilli is no longer with the CBS owned Boston station, a WBZ spokesperson has confirmed with TVSpy.

Verrilli started at the station in 2009. He came from the CBS owned station in Pittsburgh, KDKA. He has also worked as managing editor at WCBS in New York.

WBZ wouldn’t say why he left.

WBZ Adds Weekend Morning Meteorologist

niles_wbz_croppedWBZ has named Danielle Niles weekend morning meteorologist.

“Danielle is a great fit for the WBZ AccuWeather team,” John Verrilli news director for the Boston CBS owned station. “She grew up, played sports, and worked in New England all her life; so she knows the kind of weather our region can deliver and has proven to be an excellent meteorologist.”

Niles comes to WBZ from New England Cable News wheres she was the weekday morning meteorologist. Her first day on-air will be next Saturday, November 9.

Eric Fisher Named Chief Meteorologist at WBZ

Eric Fisher is joining WBZ in Boston as chief meteorologist. He will officially join the CBS O&O August 19.

Fisher returns to Boston from Atlanta, where he has been a meteorologist at The Weather Channel since 2010. He has also worked as a meteorologist for WFXT in Boston and WGGB in Springfield, Mass.

“Eric is a native New Englander who’s very familiar with our area’s dynamic weather, and he has a track record for spot-on forecasting,” WBZ news director John Verrilli said in a statement. “He also has a great deal of experience reporting live, in extreme weather, and his skills will serve the community well when he reports on breaking weather from the WBZ Mobile AccuWeather Lab.”

Fisher will handle the weather forecasts on the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on WBZ and the 10 p.m. newscast on sister station WSBK. Todd Gutner, who is currently the evening meteorologist, will shift to mornings, replacing Melissa Mack, who left WBZ earlier this year. Barry Burbank, who has been filling in on the morning newscast since Mack’s departure, will be the weekend morning meteorologist and Joe Joyce will be the weekend evening meteorologist.

Boston’s WBZ Debuts New Set Design, Graphics

WBZ, the CBS O&O in Boston, is debuting a “state-of-the-art, whiz-bang” new look tonight, according to the Boston Herald.

After six months of construction, the station will debut a new set (pictured here with anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes) and graphics package on its evening newscasts today. The new facilities, which were upgraded after 10 years in the old studio, feature high-definition monitors, energy-efficient LED lights and blue-illuminated anchor and weather desks. Read more
