Robert Handa Returns to KNTV

handa_cropped_ktnvRobert Handa is going back to KNTV.

Handa will report for the San Francisco Bay Area NBC owned station and also host a weekly program featuring the Bay Area’s Asian American community.

“We’re thrilled to have a journalist with Robert’s talents and expertise joining our staff,” Jonathan Mitchell, KNTV’s VP of news said in a statement on AsianWeek.com which first reported the news.

Handa told TVSpy by email, “I’m excited about the move and new role as I ‘return home’ to ch11(as many staffers put it). I will miss the people at ch 2.”

He started his career with KNTV when it was an ABC affiliate and joins the station from Oakland FOX affiliate KTVU. He has also worked at KPIX and KQED.

Weekend Anchor Diane Dwyer Leaving KNTV

Diane-DwyerDiane Dwyer is leaving KNTV in June, San Francisco media blogger Rich Lieberman reports.

Dwyer is the weekend anchor for the NBC-owned station in San Francisco. KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell announced the news to staff in a note obtained by Lieberman.

“Diane will be a part of some special projects in the year to come, and while we won’t see her every weekend, she’ll still contribute on-air from time-to-time,” Mitchell wrote. “I’d like to thank Diane for her years of service to NBC Bay Area and our community. Diane is an excellent journalist and we’ll miss her on the weekends, but we’re excited about our future projects together.”

Former KOMO Anchor Peggy Bunker Joins KNTV

peggy bunkerPeggy Bunker is joining KNTV, the NBC owned station in San Francisco. In her new role, Bunker will anchor the 11 a.m. newscast, as well as serving as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for the station’s morning newscast.

Bunker most recently worked at Seattle ABC affiliate KOMO, where she was the morning and midday anchor. She is a former anchor of “World News Now” and “America This Morning” for ABC News.

“We’re happy to have a journalist of Peggy’s caliber joining our newsroom. She brings with her a wealth of experience at both the local and national news levels,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said in a statement.

KyAnn Lewis Named Senior Executive Producer at KNTV

KyAnn Lewis has been named senior executive producer at KNTV, the NBC owned station in San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland.

Lewis is a former news director at KIAH in Houston and WHNS in Greenville, S.C. She has also held management and producer positions at KPTV and KGW in Portland, Ore. Most recently, she was the executive producer of “The Daily Buzz,” a syndicated morning newscast in Orlando.

“We are thrilled to have someone with KyAnn’s experience join the NBC Bay Area news team,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said in a statement. “Her talent and passion for local journalism make her a perfect fit with our news management team.”

Lewis will oversee the editorial, production and promotion components of the station’s evening newscasts. She will begin at KNTV on July 22.

Terry McSweeney Joins KNTV From Rival KGO

After five years at KGO, the ABC O&O in San Francisco, Terry McSweeney is joining rival KNTV, the NBC O&O in the Bay Area.

At KNTV, McSweeney will anchor the weekend evening newscasts alongside Diane Dwyer. He will also work as a general assignment reporter during the week. McSweeney worked at KNTV as a general assignment reporter from 1987-95.

“Terry has distinguished himself as an enterprising reporter in this market and we’re excited to welcome him back to the KNTV newsroom as part of our anchor team,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said in a statement.

McSweeney was also a weekend anchor and weekday reporter at KGO. He has also worked at KTXL in Sacramento, WPBF in Palm Beach, KSAZ in Phoenix and WTEN in Albany.

KNTV Names Sara Bueno Director of Integrated Media

Sara Bueno has been named Director of Integrated Media for KNTV, the San Francisco NBC owned station.

“Sara joins our digital team with a wealth of experience having worked in this market for more than 12 years,” Jonathan Mitchell, vice president of news said in a statement. “I am confident that she will continue our commitment of providing the Bay Area with the go-to source for continuous, in-depth coverage of local news.”

Bueno comes to KNTV from KGO where she led the editorial direction of the San Francisco ABC O&O’s website and digital platforms.

Sam Brock Set to Join KNTV in San Francisco

Sam Brock will join KNTV, the NBC owned station in the San Francisco Bay Area, next week. In his new role as a reporter, he will lead the station’s “Reality Check” franchise, analyzing politics, public policy and community issues for accuracy and honesty.

KNTV Set to Launch 11 a.m. Newscast Next Week

NBC owned-and-operated KNTV is launching the second 11 a.m. newscast in the San Francisco market on September 19.

“This expansion of NBC Bay Area news allows us to serve our Bay Area viewers with more of the high-quality international, national and local coverage they’ve come to expect from us,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said in a statement.

The newscast, which will air following NBC’s “Today” show, will be anchored by Jon Kelley and Marla Tellez. Kelley is currently the station’s morning anchor; Tellez is a reporter and fill-in anchor on the same broadcast. Read more

KNTV Adds 2 Veteran Anchors To News Team

KNTV has hired two new anchors to join its news team — veteran journalists Jon Kelley and Janelle Wang.

Kelley is a 15-year veteran of the television business. He has a broadcast career that includes time at Chicago’s WMAQ, Kansas City’s WDAF and Fox Sports. Kelly will join the NBC O&O as co-anchor of the morning show alongside Laura Garcia-Cannon.

Wang has worked in the San Francisco market for the last eight years as the host of “The View from the Bay,” a one-hour talk show on ABC O&O KGO. She will anchor KNTV’s 5 p.m. broadcast with Raj Mathai.

“We’re very happy to add these two strong, experienced journalists to our newsroom,” KNTV vice president of news Jonathan Mitchell said. The two anchors will start at the San Francisco station later this month.
