Brent Weisberg Joining KOIN From Rival KPTV

After almost four years at Portland Fox-affiliate KPTV, reporter Brent Weisberg is joining rival KOIN.

Weisberg will be a reporter for the CBS-affiliate’s morning newscast, which is anchored by Chad Carter and Alexis Del Cid.

“Brent’s energy and aggressive attitude is a perfect formula for what we are trying to achieve in our morning show,” KOIN news director Brad Neuhoff told TVSpy in an email.

Weisberg has worked at KPTV since September 2008. His first day at KOIN will be March 15.

Two Reporters Hired at KTTV in Los Angeles

KTTV, the Fox O&O in Los Angeles, has hired two new reporters: Araksya Karapetyan (pictured) and James Koh.

Karapetyan joins the station on March 13 as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for the 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts on KTTV and the 11 p.m. newscast on KCOP, the MyNetworkTV-affiliate. For the past three years, Karapetyan has been a reporter and anchor at KOIN, the CBS-affiliate in Portland.

Koh joins KTTV on March 14. He will also be a general assignment reporter, with a focus on sports and breaking news, for the 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts on KTTV and the 11 p.m. newscast on KCOP. John joins the station from KSWB, the Fox-affiliate in San Diego, where he was a multimedia journalist.

KGW Captures Attack on KOIN Photographer

Local news crews were at a Portland courthouse, covering a fatal hit-and-run case, when a man who had just been released from jail began harassing the photographers from KGW and KOIN.

When the KOIN photographer decided to call 9-1-1, the man tried to stomp on his camera.  As KGW’s camera rolled, the KOIN photog scuffled with the man and eventually tackled him to the ground, holding him there until police arrived (video inside). Read more

Jason Kravarik Tapped as Assistant News Director at KOIN in Portland

Jason Kravarik has been tapped for the assistant news director position at KOIN, the CBS-affiliate in Portland.

Kravarik has been the news director at KSN, the NBC-affiliate in Wichita, since 2009. He joined the station as a reporter in 2002.

“We always hate to lose someone as talented as Jason, but a move like this is a huge opportunity for him,” KSN general manager John Dawson said in a statement. “It’s a testament to his had work and the passion he brought to our newsteam.”

Rick Jacobs Upped to News Director at KGW

Station veteran Rick Jacobs has been promoted to news director at KGW.

Jacobs has served as assistant news director at the Portland NBC-affiliate for over a decade.

KGW president and general manager DJ Wilson confirmed the promotion to TVSpy this week.  An official announcement is expected soon.

Jacobs succeeds Rod Gramer, who left KGW this summer after 13 years as the station’s news director to become vice president and general manager at Bay News 9 in Tampa.  Before joining KGW, Jacobs worked as a producer at Portland CBS-affiliate KOIN.  He has been KGW’s acting news director for the past few months.

George Severson Named News Director at KMIR

Journal Broadcasting Group has named George Severson news director at KMIR, the NBC-affiliate serving the Coachella Valley in California.

Severson joins KMIR from KOIN, the CBS-affiliate in Portland, where he was an executive producer. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as an executive producer at KTVX, the ABC-affiliate in Salt Lake City.

“I look forward to leading our dedicated news team in producing engaging and relevant newscasts and quality local programming,” Severson said in a statement.

Severson replaces Kate Glover, who left for KNSD in August. She is an executive producer on the morning show there.

Anchor Amy Troy Jumping from KGW to KOIN

In Portland, current KGW anchor Amy Troy is moving to crosstown rival KOIN.

“I start at KOIN in a few weeks,” Troy confirmed to TVSpy via email this week. She currently anchors KGW’s 5, 10, and 11 p.m. weekend newscasts and reports for the Belo-owned station during the week.

Troy is set to anchor KOIN’s 4 p.m. weekday newscast but will work as a writer at the station until her 6-month KGW non-compete expires.

“It’s a great professional opportunity and I’m honored to join KOIN’s news team,” Troy says. “Portland is home–so my family and I are thrilled.”

Meet KOIN’s New Weathercaster: Fabio

Locked in a staggeringly handsome internet duel with original Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa, new Old Spice spokesman Fabio stopped by Portland’s KOIN this week to forecast the weather (video above).

“It’s very sunny today,” the fledgling weathercaster reported, “and it feels so nice on Fabio’s skin.”

As KOIN anchor Jeff Gianola points out, the Old Spice campaign is the work of Portland-based ad agency Wieden+Kennedy. [h/t Gawker]
