Telemundo Stations to Add Newscast and Staff

telemundo logoStarting Monday, November 3, Telemundo will launch a weekday 5:30 p.m. half-hour newscast in 14 markets.

The NBCUniversal owned station group also said it will hire nearly 30 employees to support the expanded news schedule.

“Today’s announcement marks a new era for the Telemundo Station Group and Spanish-language news,” Manuel Martinez, president of the Telemundo Station Group said in a statement. “All of our stations have a commitment to deliver the best local breaking news and  weather to our viewers and this expansion will help.”

The new newscast will debut at Telemundo stations in Los Angeles (KVEA), New York (WNJU), Miami (WSCV), Houston (KTMD), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), Chicago (WSNS), SF Bay Area (KSTS), San Antonio (KVDA), Phoenix (KTAZ), Tucson (KHRR), McAllen (KTLM), Denver (KDEN), Philadelphia (WWSI) and Las Vegas (KBLR).

Luis Treto Joins KVEA in Los Angeles

luis tretoLuis Treto is joining KVEA, the Telemundo station in Los Angeles, MediaMoves reports. He joins KVEA after a year at CNN Latino, which was recently closed.

“My new gig comes one week after CNN Latino laid me off during the closure of the network,” Treto told MediaMoves. “Joining Telemundo will bring more growth opportunities as a news reporter. I’m very happy to be part of the team and I’ve been welcomed with so much warmth by them that I feel already at home.”

Treto will be a general assignment reporter at KVEA. He started this week.

Telemundo Los Angeles Adds Estafania Iglesias as Weather and Traffic Reporter

iglesias_telemundo_croppedEstafania Iglesias has joined Telemundo Los Angeles/KVEA as morning weather and traffic reporter.

She joins anchors Dunia Elvir and Julio Vaqueiro on the expanded Noticiero Telemundo 52, Buenos Dias Los Angeles. The show runs from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday to Friday.

“Estefania brings a fresh and fun approach to the traffic and weather segments, which are very important to our community,” Celia Chavez, president and general manager of Telemundo 52/KVEA said in a statement. “She’s a great addition to the newscast team.”

Iglesias started her career as a host for America TV in Argentina. She has also worked at E! Entertainment Latin America. Most recently she was a weather and entertainment reporter for KRCA in Los Angeles.

Julio Vaqueiro to Join KVEA in Los Angeles

Julio Vaqueiro will join Los Angeles Telemundo station KVEA as a morning anchor.

Vaquero, who will co-anchor the morning show with Dunia Elvir, comes to KVEA from the Telemundo Mexico City Bureau where he was a correspondent for “Al Rojo Vivo.”

Before coming to Telemundo in 2011, Vaquero wrote, reported and anchored for Efecto TV in Mexico.

KTTV Adds Reporter Sandra Endo, Producer Angelica Quiroga

KTTV in Los Angeles has made two hires: Sandra Endo (pictured) joins the Fox O&O as a general assignment reporter and Angelica Quiroga has been hired as evening executive producer.

Endo, who begins at KTTV July 1, was most recently a freelance reporter at WMAQ in Chicago. Prior to that, she spent five years as a national correspondent for CNN Newsource. She will contribute to “Studio 11 L.A.” and “Fox 11 News at 10 p.m” on KTTV and “Fox 11 News at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.” on sister station KCOP.

Quiroga joins KTTV from KVEA, the Telemundo station in Los Angeles, where she was an executive producer for 11 years. She begins at KTTV as executive producer for “Fox 11 News at 10 p.m.” on June 24.

Ruben Keoseyan Named VP of Content at KVEA

Telemundo Media has named Ruben Keoseyan vice president of content for KVEA in Los Angeles.

Keoseyan has been executive editor of La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the U.S., since 2011. In his new role, he will oversee all KVEA’s newscasts.

“Ruben is a recognized leader with solid journalistic integrity, extensive experience in the Los Angeles market and expertise in Spanish-language media overall,” Celia Chavez, the president and general manager of the station, said in a statement. “His leadership and insights will play a significant role in contributing to the ongoing success of KVEA’s news department.”

KTLA Reporter Breaks Up with LA Mayor

The three-year relationship between KTLA reporter Lu Parker and Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is over.

A spokesperson for Parker confirmed the split with the Los Angeles Times on Monday.

Parker, who has been with KTLA since 2005, began dating Villaraigosa in 2009, two years after the mayor was involved in an extramarital affair with a reporter for KVEA, the Los Angeles Telemundo station (he since divorced his wife).

A former Miss USA, Parker was working as an anchor and general assignment reporter for KTLA, often covering local politics, when she began dating Villaraigosa.

After the start of their relationship, KTLA moved Parker off of the anchor desk, and eventually redefined her role with the station as special correspondent. Read more

Telemundo Names GMs in LA, Puerto Rico, Miami

As part of a multimillion dollar investment in its O&Os, the Telemundo station group has announced the appointment of new general managers in three markets: Los Angeles, Puerto Rico and Miami.

Celia Chavez will take the helm at KVEA in Los Angeles. Chavez comes from WSNS, the Telemundo station in Chicago, where she has been president and general manager since 2009.

At WKAQ in Puerto Rico, Jose Cancela will take over as president and general manager. Cancela comes from KVEA in Los Angeles, where he has been president for less than a year. Read more

NBCUniversal to Relocate LA News Operations, Including KNBC

NBC Universal announced plans to relocate its Los Angeles news operations, including KNBC and KVEA, to a new state-of-the-art facility on the Universal lot next year.

In addition to NBC owned-and-operated KNBC and Telemundo-affiliate KVEA, the LA bureau for NBC’s “Nightly News” and Telemundo will be moved, according to the Los Angeles Times. The current NBC Universal building is in Burbank.

KNBC’s studio facilities were upgraded just last month as part of a rebranding effort at the station.

NBC Scraps Plan for Huge Los Angeles News Facility

NBCUniversal has decided to kill an ambitious plan to develop an office development and news production facility in the Universal City section of Los Angeles.

According to a recently released SEC filing from developer Thomas Properties Group, which was posted by Curbed LA, NBCUniversal agreed to terminate further work on a development that would have included space for KNBC, Telemundo-affiliate KVEA, and NBC News’ West Coast bureau, as well as “Access Hollywood.” Read more
