WCNC, the Charlotte NBC affiliate, put some consumer grade sports cameras inside a lunchbox, tied it to a helium filled balloon and launched it into the atmosphere, just because they could.

According to KVUE, WCNC’s sister station, Corrie Harding, WCNC’s news director, saw a video on YouTube of two people launching a beer can into space. He wanted to see if his station could do the same thing.

With the help of Hackerspace Charlotte, a collaborative space for people who like to tinker with technology, the station took two GoPro cameras, the lunchbox, a helium filled balloon, a 3D model of an astronaut with meteorologist Larry Sprinkle‘s face attached and let it go to see how high it would reach. Charlotte NBC-affiliate WCNC unveiled a brand-new set this week.

“We’re still getting used to the new digs out here,” anchor Ira Cronin said during WCNC’s morning newscast on Wednesday. “[Meteorologist] Larry [Sprinkle] went to the wrong place in the studio this morning trying to find the weather wall.” Read more

There may be no other TV personality in the country who takes Halloween as seriously as WCNC morning weathercaster Larry Sprinkle.

Sprinkle, who has been with the Charlotte NBC-affiliate since 1985, doesn’t just dress up for Halloween, he dresses up several times during the course of a Halloween morning newscast.

This morning, Sprinkle wore ten (ten!) different costumes during WCNC’s two-and-a-half-hour-long morning show. Also, all of Sprinkle’s costumes are original characters, created by, as he puts it, “a very strange mind.” Video inside… Read more
