Not All Little Rock Stations Agree on Drone Use for News

drone_AP_304Arkansas Business reports about the emerging use of drones in the Little Rock market.

Local drone pilot Tim Trieschmann told AB he owns three remote helicopters and uses them to shoot video for NBC affiliate KARK, CBS affiliate KTHV, and FOX affiliate KLRT. Trieschmann said he sees it as a cheaper alternative to using a helicopter.

Austin Kellerman, news director for KARK-KLRT, said he agreed with Trieschmann. “sometimes the quality of video and perspective isn’t all that great. It can be almost distracting; depending on the setup, the camera might shake and the video would not necessarily be that clean.”

ABC affiliate KATV told AB it uses a drone owned by a station photographer to shoot stories. But not all stations agree on using the unmanned vehicles for news purposes.

“We’re not utilizing drones,” said Michael Caplan, general manager of KTHV.

Trieschmann’s work for that station has been for promotional videos only, not for news coverage.

Caplan said one reason the station isn’t using Trieschmann or other drone operators for breaking news is because of uncertain regulation surrounding the tech. Read more

KTHV Adds Denise Middleton as Anchor

Denise Middleton AnnounceLittle Rock CBS affiliate KTHV has announced Denise Middleton as evening anchor.

“I am very excited to have Denise on board,” KTHV news director Dave Parker said in a statement. “She brings a wealth of knowledge, energy, and passion to her work. Denise’s commitment to community is an important foundation for sharing the stories important to Arkansans.”

Middleton last worked at KSLA in Shreveport, LA, as morning anchor. She has also worked at KHAS in Hastings, NE.

Dave Parker Joins KTHV as News Director

Dave Parker has been named news director for Little Rock CBS affiliate KTHV.

“I am thrilled to be joining the news team at THV 11,” said Parker. “I have always been committed to great story telling, responsible journalism and becoming a big part of the community.  My family is equally excited about making the move to Arkansas.”

Parker comes to KTHV from WCAU, the Philadelphia NBC owned station, where he has been the assistant news director for the last ten years. Read more

Randy Ingram Named VP-GM Of WBTW

Media General has named Randy Ingram vice president and general manager at WBTW, the CBS-affiliate in Myrtle Beach.

Ingram joined Media General in 2005 as station manager and general sales manager of WYCW in Spartanburg, SC. Since 2010, he has been general manager and general sales manager of WRBL in Columbus.

In announcing the hire, Media General’s Mid-South president and market leader John Cottingham said Ingram is “well-suited to deliver for us in Myrtle Beach-Florence.”

“I am delighted for Randy to bring his many talents and great ideas to our station,” he said. Read more

Michael Caplan Named President, GM of KTHV

Michael Caplan has been named president and general manager of Gannett Broadcasting’s KTHV, the CBS affiliate in Little Rock.

Caplan spent the past 13 years in a variety of positions at Media General. He has been vice president and general manager of WBTW, the CBS affiliate in Florence-Myrtle Beach, SC, since 2006; in 2009, his responsibilities were expanded when Media General named him group leader for Florence-Myrtle Beach multimedia operations, where he oversaw WBTW, as well as a handful of print outlets in the market.

“Michael brings significant and proven multimedia experience to the team at [KTHV],” Gannett president Dave Lougee said in a statement. “His talents, combined with his passion for excellence make him the ideal leader of KTHV’s award-winning service to the people of Central Arkansas.”
