Meteorologists Mike LaPoint, Cheryl Lemke Join WOWT

Meteorologists Mike LaPoint and Cheryl Lemke have joined WOWT, the NBC affiliate in Omaha.

LaPoint comes to WOWT from WPXI in Pittsburgh, where worked for five years. He will be WOWT’s chief meteorologist, replacing Jim Flowers, who left the station in December.

Lemke joins WOWT from WSBT in South Bend, where she has worked since 2010. Prior to that, Lemke spent 22 years at The Weather Channel. In her new role at WOWT, she will focus on special projects for the station and its weather-related digital channel.

“We know that the most important coverage for you and your family is tracking, alerting and accurately forecasting local weather where you live to help you plan your day every day,” the station said in announcing the hires.

Meteorologist Mike LaPoint Out at WPXI

Mike LaPoint, who joined WPXI in 2007 as chief meteorologist, is out at the Pittsburgh NBC affiliate. The Pittburgh Post-Gazette reports that LaPoint’s contract was not renewed.

“We met with Mike [in] late summer and told him we wouldn’t likely be renewing his contract at the end of the year,” WPXI GM Ray Carter told the Post-Gazette in an email. “He began a quiet search at that point and as I understand it, is in the running for a couple of different weather jobs. He was a terrific employee in terms of work ethic and how he carried himself. We will miss his energetic attitude and real love of weather forecasting.”

A search for LaPoint’s replacement is underway.

WPXI Shuffles Weekend, Morning Meteorologists

Pittsburgh NBC-affiliate WPXI has swapped the schedules of two meteorologists, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Mike LaPoint (pictured), formerly the meteorologist for the weekday morning newscast, has been reassigned to weekends. Kevin Benson, formerly the weekend meteorologist, will take his place in the mornings.

“Viewers in Pittsburgh have come to trust Kevin over the years on weekends, and we felt Kevin’s friendly presence would be a perfect addition to the morning team,” WPXI news director Mike Goldrick said.
